President Trump called on Congress to legalize DACA late Tuesday, just hours after his administration announced the repeal of the amnesty for children brought to the country illegally promising that he will revisit this issue if Congress does not turn DACA into legislation.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the repeal of the Obama era executive order known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program both on constitutional grounds and also on principle.
The effect of this unilateral executive amnesty, among other things, contributed to a surge of unaccompanied minors on the southern border that yielded terrible humanitarian consequences, Sessions said. It also denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens.
The move saw significant opposition from Democrats and voices in the media, while even some Republicans who formerly opposed DACA called for Congress to act to resolve the issue with legislation.
The rollback includes a six-month delay so as to allow Congress to act if it so chose. The White House had expressed hope that the issue could be included as part of a broader immigration legislation package, with Trump tweeting that he hoped to work with Democrats and Republicans for a reform that puts hardworking citizens of our country 1st.
But by late Tuesday, Trump appeared to have turned into a paper tiger on the key campaign promise to get rid of DACA, saying he would revisit this issue if Congress did not legalize DACA.

No, he gets rid of it.
Looks that way to me. He’s caving and nothing in return. Not even a demand for wall funding. Nothing. Poorly played too. He gets an entire day of hell raining down on him and then at the end of said day he announces he’s caving. If he was going to cave he could have saved being shredded by leading with it. Now he has betrayed his base and savaged by MSM.
That’s the threat I make to my kids when I have no idea what I’m actually going to do.
Don’t make me come up there.....
Why?
Just, um, don’t make me......
From personal experience, it’s not a terribly effective technique.
Trump has won big-time on this. Congress now gets to vote up or down—who do they represent—American citizens or illegal immigrants?
Congress can decide its own fate—as it should be.
Oh, yeah, Ryan is going to jump on this just like he jumps on every issue. Hah! The President put him in a corner. I’ll enjoy watching the little punk squirm.
Never pay attention to the president’s words. Always pay attention to his actions.
Revisit does not made KEEP it necessarily. It probably means “can it.”
If they really wanted to legalize it themselves, then why didn’t they pass it when they had a president who they KNEW would sign it? Congress wants DACA but they don’t want to vote for it. It’s the same old sh!t as ObamaCare, isn’t it?
Trump has already taken action by phasing out DACA.
When it phases out, why would he need to “re-visit” it?
So it is brought to a head in six months or so. Some how a decision has to be made
thru legislation or the courts.
Congress has the job of establishing immigration laws.
They always have and it’s always been a contentious issue.
There are many compromises that can be made. Age when the person came here, whether other family members are legally here (parents, children), work status and other indications of desire to assimilate, college enrollment . . . This is not a win/lose situation.
He gets rid of it.
The EO was unconstitutional. That’s not really in dispute.
If Congress wants to make every Mexican an American citizen, they have that power legislatively.
I’m reading this as Trump saying, “Turn Obama’s EO into a statute, and I’ll sign it.”
There is nothing unconstitutional there.
What is politically possible is to give the pre-DACA kids a path to citizenship and the post-DACA kids the boot.
Today Trump’s pushing for them to work on tax reform, not DACA. At least that’s what they’re saying on Fox.
I am sorry but this makes no sense. Either he is for DACA ending or not.
End it.
Put it on Congress to do something. They do it or not.
What are you saying? He is for DACA if he gets the wall?
He really weakened his position by saying he will revisit if Congress can’t legalize it.
“Okay..so what exactly is he going to do when he revisits it.”
Put a final spike through it.
In any case, we’ll know within a day or two as to whether Trump caved. I have a really tough time thinking that he’s caved that quickly, without even prepping us.
...and keep in mind that ending DACA doesn’t address the Dreamers...they’d still be here Trump has been wishy-washy on that aspect of things - so even if I am right about DACA, we may still not be happy in the end.
The do-nothing Congress isn’t going to act on this. They haven’t done anything in eight months except go on recess every few weeks.
They are a bunch of talkers always looking to dodge responsibility.
Any new law regarding the Dreamers should include the requirement that they pay back at least 50% of everything they wrongfully received from US taxpayers from the time they arrived illegally until now. They certainly should not expect to be rewarded for their theft of services without some penalty.
You don’t know that. AND HE CAN END IT NOW IF IT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
Ending it NOW doesn’t change the fact that it would still be a TAUNT to Congress (excuse people are using to justify this nonsense)
Congress will or won’t act on it. It doesn’t take Trump saying he will revisit it in 6 months.
