Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

If you had to guess would you think that Irma goes right up the middle of the state or hits the Keys goes into the Gulf and makes a second landing on the Gulf coast?
Or is there another track?

I booked directly with the hotel. Someone else used Trivago and didn’t end up any better than my experience.

You would think. She has lived in Florida for 11 years now. I was just there during Tropical Storm Emily; a lot of rain but the roads sure flooded fast.

Mood from newcomers to Fl...what’s the big deal...mood from long time Floridians. ..sober.

Mood about newcomers will be sober at their funerals.

No hint of veering off its Cat 5 track in that loop.

I think if you go to TripAdvisor it will pull up rates from several sites. I usually seem to have better luck going to the hotel website though.

Is that landfall now?

Where is Miami in relation to that?

Man, Irma looks like a dead ringer for that 1935 Labor Day storm, doesn’t it?

Landfall within 24 hours in the Leeward Islands (you can see them outlined on the left side of the image). Miami is about five days to the west of that.

Labor Day storm actually blew up to Cat 5 in the Florida Straits and was a compact storm. Irma is already Cat 5 a long ways out and is turning into a large storm.

I would recommend contacting a specific property. They may have a wait list. Ran into that last year when booking a room for evacuees from Matthew. Otherwise, there is Trivago, Hotels.com. I haven’t used either one, so can’t recommend.

No. We are on a boat. We just float over it.

Problem would be if the dock floats over the pilings and goes down the river. We had LOTS of docks in the area do this for Matthew, but, ours did not.

Good idea. I wonder if we have any freepers in the hotel/motel biz that could give us a good list to refer to. I have a feeling its gonna take a lotta looking at least in Fla. to find a room or motel.

She is teacher. I texted her before she arrived at school and her response to me was “?” No doubt by now she has been enlightened. Her husband is here in Michigan on business and I am sure he is frantic.

She was too busy playing with the grandkids and making ceviche yesterday to watch TV. I figured as much.
