Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

Won’t be transmitting much longer.

Apparently not. Eyewall is 2 hours away from Barbuda.

Does the smaller storm forming behind Irma have a name yet?

Pentagon diverting two warships and Marine expeditionary unit for post Irma relief. Not sure if I’ve heard of that before. Kinda ominous?

Maybe more because of a president who actually cares about the people he represents.

Got a brother in Naples. He’s far enough inland so storm surge shouldn’t be an issue. But I’m not sure about local inland flooding.

Current projections show the hurricane off the coast of Naples late this weekend. It looks like SW Florida will be on the right front quadrant of the storm. If memory serves me right, that’s one of the worst areas to be.

Fort Myers News-Press reports that schools will be closing on Thursday in preparation for the storm.

Dry Tortugas National Park (at the end of the Keys) is closing tomorrow. It’s a huge Civil War-era masonry fort. Looking at pictures of it, I wonder if one could ride the storm out in there and be OK. It looks solid enough. Not that I’d want to try it though.

Jose.

It’s only a tropical storm right now and it looks like it may just be heading out to sea. It looks to be turning northward well off the coast.

And one more thing - a solar phone charger, order it online and you’ll get it before you need to leave.

Beginning to think so as well. Miami with heavy winds and surf, but then it will head up off the east coast and downgrade to a Cat 2 by the time it gets to Charleston and possibly skirting the OBX before heading out. Where ever Jim Cantore goes, Irma will be just to the east or north. Haha! Poor Jim’s been in a slump lately... :-)

But in the meantime, never let a good natural disaster go to waste when you can use it for marketing or political purposes!

For now, the prayers are going up for the good folks in the Northern Leeward Islands. Sounds like they’re about to get hit by a 100 mile wide F5 tornado.

Well, sleep on it.
Consider showing up- after damage is assessed- with supplies for the repair of the house. Sounds like you’re a guy that can lay shingles and wallboard. That may be just what they need, and an adventure you’d enjoy.
But heck, I have no idea what is needed after a hurricane- or how codes, insurance, and ‘whatever’ red tape affects the process.

Yes, Jose.

This is what I posted on post 611 on this thread. This guy says Jose will follow right behind Irma (7 days later) and hit the same area as did Irma.
