I have to say I was really shocked to see a lot of leftists come out against antifa (though of course not all-- Elizabeth Edwards). I'm shocked because the left always embraces and protects its extremists, no matter what they do (for example black lives matter thugs). This is the only time I have seen them do this, so what's the deal?

I agree. Even when they criticize Antifa thugs, they imply or even outright say that their motives are good. The next move will probably be to claim that it is really right wingers who are dressing up as the lovable Antifa and causing all the violence. The left never truly turns on its own. Only Republicans do that.
President Trump is the root cause for why the Democrats have turned on Antifa.

Because they're widely being exposed for the violent communist revolutionaries that they are? Very hard to stand and defend that. That is, unless you're a Maxine Waters type hardcore lefty. She even defended the '92 Rodney King riots, where 58 people were murdered with a billion-plus in property damage due to arson and looting. They even shot at the firemen for responding. That action, btw, was instigated by an organization called the Revolutionary Communist Party. The RCP has a front operating today in the current protests called "Refuse Fascism--Drive Out the Trump-Pence Regime". In addition, the RCP is an organizer for the phony Black Lives Matter movement. Their internal polls are scaring the shit out of them. Their support of both Antifa’s and BLM’s violent antics is red-pilling everyone that isn’t a loon. They are driving away the middle-class, whites, independents, anyone who really understands communism, etc. Liberalism is a disease but communism is an anal warts, herpes, and HIV combo contagion.

Democrat polls must show that Middle Class voters connect Antifa and BLM with their party. They will sell out their own mothers to win in next year’s elections.
They couldn't afford any internal bickering if they hoped to take down "The Man".
However, the leftists have broken this compact. They are openly attacking liberals and left-leaning centrists. They have caused liberals to lose their jobs and lose control of the empires they created, e.g. academia, journalism, entertainment, etc.
There is a great opportunity for liberals, conservatives, and libertarians to come together on certain constitutional issues such as supporting free speech, opposing the notion of 'hate speech', opposing the creation of safe zones and the enforcement of penalties against so-called 'microaggressions', and even the opposition to civil forfeiture.
It would go a long way toward bridging the gap between the polarized opposite if those of us who are still sane could tell antifa, BLM, the remnants of the KKK and neo-NAZI's to all go pound sand ... preferably in a place with lots of it like Syria.
Many of them—especially the instructor and graduate leaders—have gone back to classes. They’ll be indulging more in their many other methods of causing trouble.

My guess: review of video evidence from Charlottesville will show the hIt and run driver had been attacked by antifa scum and was fleeing in panic. Not guilty of attempted murder. Note that I find neo nazis reprehensible but they had a permit and thus had the right to demonstrate. Lefties in congress trying to distance themselves before the reports come out from FBI. Remember, everybody convicted George Zimmerman in advance and then were gobsmacked when he walked, where his disparate force defense worked brilliantly. Methinks lefties in congress got a heads up that the Charlottesville situation was not quite what it seemed.
I don’t think they’ve turned on them. Some are trying to distance themselves in order to reduce the risk of being blamed. But most of them are not that smart.
