Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner can be thankful that he has the magic "D" by his name. Had he been a Trump supporting Republican, he would have already been crucified in the mainstream media for urging that residents of Houston, Texas not evacuate even though there was already a high risk of severe flooding from Hurricane Harvey at the time he made his faulty recommendation. As a result, the MSM has so far been mostly very circumspect reporting about his non-evacuation order beginning with his Friday tweet:

The tweet: “Please think twice before trying to leave Houston en masse. No evacuation orders have been issued for the city. #Harvey”
That sounds like a polite way of saying “don’t evacuate”.
Yeah, he could get a lot of trouble from that.
This Mayor has spent his time running his mouth about issues that he has no control over like global warming.
He didn’t pay attention to his job, and this storm shows it.
I saw a video of him making fun of Republicans because of Hillary’s e-mails.
Well, the big mouth needs to spend less time being a Democrat and more time being the Mayor of Houston.
As one that has lived in and outside of Houston since 1983, you CANNOT effectively evacuate this area in the time frame that this was an issue. Mayor Turner is a typical Houston Democrat but he didn’t get this wrong.
He should have said leaving is up to you, not that moronic blanket tweet he made
Nobody said they had to evacuate 4 million people. Just the folks who can’t care for themselves and anyone at high risk for flooding.
Would it have been so awful for him to say,
“If you live in an area of Houston that has flooded in the past, then you should evacuate. This storm is bringing us 50 inches of rain. If you are worried that you live in an area that might flood with that kind of rain, then evacuate.”
He had days to say that.
He didn’t.
He basically told everyone to only listen to him and then he told them to stay.
The people of Houston will have to decide whether he took the proper actions for this emergency, and BEFORE this emergency.
I listened to his press conference yesterday and had turn him off. He seems to have about a 90 IQ.
The writer is correct, however, that if he were a Republican the media and "experts" would be all over him.
“Ray Nagin II?”
Yes. Sylvester “Nothing to See Here” Turner.
He was right. If he had been Republican he would have ripped apart. The rule is find the nearest Republican or White to blame.
And if he said "evacuate" and six million people tried to hit the road? How much trouble would that have caused?
How is Texas still a RED State? What cities in Texas have Republican Mayors?
It appears that the whole darned city is flooding.
I agree. I have lived in the Houston area on and off for 30 years. No matter what Mayor Turner said, it was going to turn out bad for Houston in this hurricane.
People who have never lived in a place with the population density of Houston have no idea how crowded it is.
During Rita people were stuck for days in their cars three miles from home.
Gridlock occurs on a routine basis on a normal traffic day.
If you call for an evacuation, you’re just going to get thousands of people stranded for days in their cars not moving an inch.
He’s supposed to have a plan for evacuating six million people on short notice.
The dense urban areas are heavily Democratic, but Texas is really REALLY big and most of the population do not live in the urban centers.
It’s not the whole city. > 50 inches measured in my yard and the street is still draining and we are still dry inside.
OIC =)
