It is a sign of a cultural movement that seeks to embed itself by erasing all history of anything prior to it, so that people cannot center around historical monuments or have reminders of the past.
Islam has done this repeatedly, from the Buddhas of Bamiyan to ISIS destroying artifacts in museums. The fundamentalists who wanted to destroy the pyramids were told no by the state because tourism was too important to average Muslims’ survival.
The Great Leap Forward in China did exactly this, while the French Revolution had similar demands down to changing the calendar.

The mullah's had an argument that the statue was offensive in islamic Afghanistan, and they did not care for the historical heritage of their people. Revision/erasure of history was more important to them.
