NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - A Virginia man could face $1.6 million in fines after he was caught with more than half-a-million contraband cigarettes in Brooklyn.

New York tax officials say the car he was driving had been under surveillance and in a garage. They arrested Derar Hajjat, 30, of Chincoteague, Virginia.

He was charged with three cigarette tax-related felonies. Hajjat was released on his own recognizance. A court date has yet to be scheduled.

In addition to the criminal charges, he faces fines of up to $600 per carton seized. That could amount to more than $1.6 million in fines. It was unclear if Hajjat had a lawyer.

Derar Hajjat, 30, of Chincoteague, Virginia.

If I remember correctly, Hajjat is one of the "First Families of Virginia."

That’s about 2,500 cartons.

The fines work about to be about $3 per cigarette.

i do not see a problem with what he did.

I don't either.

In 2014 when I was a smoker, was buying cartons of Marlboro Reds in the Republic of Georgia for $6 --about a tenth of what they sold for in the United States.

Lots of people got rich fast with the $250 billion tobacco tax settlement. Others didn't see a dime. It's a racket. If you know the right people, there's money beyond your wildest dreams, most of it paid to you by poor addicts.

Where does one buy smokes, wholesale or retail, that have not already been taxed? I thought federal taxes were applied when RJ and other cigarette companies sell to wholesale resellers. So again, where did this muslim find cigarettes that were not already taxed?

If he had been a normal American, NY probably would have had him shot no questions asked.

He was buying them in Virginia which has the lowest tobacco tax rates in the US. A $40 carton of Newports in VA goes for more than twice that price in New York.

With the number of cartons he had he must have done a lot of traveling in VA since the law says a person or group may not purchase more than five cartons, and that also means they can't go out the door and just go back in to get five more.

Uh, yes, well I think Robert Spencer has written about these schemes to fund the caliphate by selling cigarettes to high tax states.

Sell ‘em and pay off the national debt. That many cartons should be worth close to $100 Trillion, right?

I didn't realize there was so much difference in cigarette taxes between states. After your post, I checked and learned that NY cigarette taxes are $4.35/pack and VA is $0.30 . WOW!! No wonder they call NY the land of taxes.
