NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - A Virginia man could face $1.6 million in fines after he was caught with more than half-a-million contraband cigarettes in Brooklyn.
New York tax officials say the car he was driving had been under surveillance and in a garage. They arrested Derar Hajjat, 30, of Chincoteague, Virginia.
He was charged with three cigarette tax-related felonies. Hajjat was released on his own recognizance. A court date has yet to be scheduled.
In addition to the criminal charges, he faces fines of up to $600 per carton seized. That could amount to more than $1.6 million in fines. It was unclear if Hajjat had a lawyer.
We should legalize cigarettes so this criminal activity will be discoura.... oh, wait....
Must be one of those dark Italians......................
“It was unclear if Hajjat had a lawyer.” .... or if he was on a flight out of the country.
He should have pulled an Eric Garner when they arrested him. Avoid the fine and your family gets rich from the lawsuit.
This is why states are legalizing marijuana. To tax the bejeebers out of it.
And dumb dopers think they can have so many ounces of home-grown tax free?
Yeah Right.
Looks like the DNC lost another donor
Soon the headline will be about untaxed soda pop.
Then raids on soda pop dealers, and raids on the wrong place where everyone inside is killed.
Hajjat was released on his own recognizance.
Buy bye. He’ll be gone like a fart in a hurricane. How stupid can you get?
i do not see a problem with what he did.
Me neither. Buy low. Sell high. Simple human economic motivation. So long as the vendor who buys them passes on the savings.
Jihad money?
He’ll get a few years. At least he wasn’t hawking singles.
That would be my guess......................
Pigs get fat but hogs get slaughtered... :-)
Which immigration agent let him in?
Whoever he was he’s a democrat...................
Back in the sixties, a friend and I would buy $100 worth of cigarettes at the Qualla Indian Reservation for 0.10 cents a pack...Sell them out back of the neighborhood bowling alley for 0.25 cents a pack...They were 0.35 cents out of the machine...
We made a right good profit for those days...LOL
Exactly! Here in California a couple of plants in your backyard was just a slap on the wrist. Now that the entitled politicians have their hooks in you will be crucified.
I remember reading a few years ago that cigarette smuggling was one of the principal ways American jihadi's raised funds for their home bound comrades.
