A Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore early Monday morning local time, the Navy said.
There were 10 sailors missing and five injured, the Navy said.
The collision with the merchant ship Alnic MC occurred east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, as the McCain was on its way for a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.

“boat” are black and sink. This was a ship.
With a hole in her port side, more than likely the other ship was/is at fault, it this was a crossing accident. The ship on the starboard side has the right away when ossing.
In order to preserve their reputations, shouldn't they have changed their names?

The Fitz ran into (was moving much faster than) the ACX Crystal, not vice versa.
I analyzed the damage on both ships -- and that is preciselyt how it was.
And, my drawing of the positions of the two ships at collision matched the (much later) USN drawing within a couple of degrees -- and rlmorel's was essentially identical to mine....
In this case, the track of the Alnic was dead straight and unvarying for miles. All the blundering McCain had to do was keep out of her way...

Knock off the stupid conspiracy bu!!$#|+!!!
Still seems astonishing that the USN ship would not take evasive action in time, if necessary. We should not be dependent upon the quality and competence of every civilian ship’s crew to avoid collisions with USN ships, but it’s looking like we have to worry about the quality and competence on at least a few USN ships, too.
There is. Here he was in 1992, at the christening of another boat named McCain:

It was daylight. Now what excuse did the crew have?
Sorry. It's a lot easier than that. It's not maintenance. It's not enemy action. It's supposedly trained and experienced officers (OOD is typically a LT) who can't/won't do their jobs. Not running into other ships doesn't require exceptional skill. A little experience, common sense, thinking ahead, and watching for what's around you, and it's all easily handled.
possible. But the damage could have been done during a radical maneuver to try to avoid collision. Would seem to me that the tanker would have been heading toward Singapore or headed to the North East away from Singapore. McCain was headed toward Singapore. If that was the case and the tanker was also headed for Singapore then they would have been on roughly parallel courses and possible an overtaking situation at the time of collision. If the tanker was headed away from Singapore, then they may have been on reciprocal courses and it could have been a meeting situation.
That's ok, but too much of that and you get accidents like this.
The primary guy resonsible for the safe navigation of the ship is the Officer of the Deck. His first job is not running into rocks or other ships. It's really pretty easy. Yeah lots of backup is helpful to ensure that a 98% performer is turned into a 100% performer, but if the OOD is not operating at 98% the rest doesn't matter.
I suspect that the problem is failure to focus on the essentials. I'll bet JOs are spending a lot less time in navigation trainers and tactical trainers and a lot more time on social engineering training and safety admin training.

Aw, crud.
Prayers up!
NO...his father.
actually the collision took place about an hour and a half before sunrise. The 06:30 time is Japan Standard time. Singapore is one hour later than JST.
The collision occurred around 05:30 Singapore time. Sunrise was about 07:00 Singapore time.
“After the previous incident involving a warship off Japan this sends a bad message and raises plenty of questions.”
Yes it does, and they are about leadership and training. We need some new Admirals who are more interested in the Navy’s mission than in providing government-paid addadicktomies for their gay recruits.
All the direction changes made by Crystal were after the 1;30 collision.
My mistake Singapore is one hour earlier than JST.
-- based on the size and elevation of the damage shown on the McCain...
