Amman (AFP) US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis confirmed Sunday that the Trump administration had decided on a new strategy for Afghanistan after rigorous debate, but said President Donald Trump would be the one to announce it.
Mattis refused to hint at any details of the decision, which came after months of speculation over whether Trump, frustrated with a stalemate after 16 years in Afghanistan, would allow the Pentagon to boost troop numbers on the ground in the country.
However Mattis appeared satisfied after what he described as an in-depth review of the policy by much of the presidents cabinet and top security officials at Camp David on Friday.
Im very comfortable that the strategic process was sufficiently rigorous, and did not go in with a preset condition in terms of what questions could be asked and what decisions could be made, he said.

Oh, I thought John McCain was in charge of this now.
On Aug. 4 when I met with Bannon & Gorka at the EEOB, we discussed this relative to McMaster:
Bannon said that Pompeo (CIA) had one plan, a second was coming via DOJ (Sessions) and McMaster had a third. Bannon said McMaster’s was a traditional big troop approach, but that he thought “some variation” of the Pompeo/Sessions plan would be the one accepted. We’ll see.
“after rigorous debate”
Sounds good to me. Sounds like they hashed it all out with the pros and cons.
Even soldiers (blood) and taxpayers (treasure) were asked?
I'm sure Donald Trump would go to great lengths to steer clear of any course of action that has already been taken and failed miserably under the two @ssholes who preceded him in the White House.
Needs time to decide how to explain it to the American people? Sounds like the entry of private contractors.
Rockets! I wanna see more ROCKETS !!
That's what McMaster is pushing too. Bill Kristol is so excited he just made a mess in his bathrobe.
How dense can can they be? Sixteen years of failure and all of a sudden it's a new improved Afghan burger, now now with more Taste-Oh, the secret sauce.
McMaster, for one.
Better yet, bring home every soldier we have there and have the last one out give a one fingered salute to that ungrateful hell hole.
another lost war that the brass hats want to throw more victims at
Beyond words. Let us spend another trillion dollars and a few thousand more live and accomplish - nothing.
Eradicating the Tali’s in Afghanistan will accomplish - nothing. They will return as soon as we pull out.
If we stayed their forever we would still accomplish - nothing. The low intensity conflict would never end. The culture would never change.
There is only one solution for that country and it comes straight out of the 11th century.
Any strategy except GTFO will fail. Unless one realizes that the actual goal is eternal war and all that means for globalists, remfs and arms manufacturers one will never make sense of our policies.
Look how brave our leaders are! They are willing to fight to the last 19 year old.
Don’t forget to declare victory before packing up and heading home. It’s very important to declare victory. Makes it so much easier getting in to the next endless war if you can point to all the previous victories we’ve won.
