Back in the days when colleges and universities purpose was to educate, challenge and encourage thoughtful experience, Dick Gregory came to speak at my school. This was still in the time when freedom of speech was a protected and cherished right.
It was a two day event with George Lincoln Rockwell (head of American Nazi Party)speaking the next day. Gregory ,at the end of his speech said he would stay an extra day, for free, if Rockwell would accept a challenge to a debate on the third night.The challenge was accepted and the speaking venue was jammed with students waiting to see what would happen. Well Gregory made Rockwell look pathetic. Gregory was funny, bright, witty and fast thinking. Rockwell was had none of those attributes and you could see how evil Rockwell and his minions were , parading in their Nazi uniforms.This was almost 50 years ago and I still remember those three days.
It is sad to think that my grandchildren will probably never experience this freedom of thought and speech as these great institutions of higher education no longer respect, encourage or protect them.
