Dumbest News Story of the Day

At the University of Southern California, activists have pointed out that the horse that the school’s Trojan mascot rides around the football stadium on has almost the same name as Robert E. Lee’s horse! The Los Angeles Times reports:

When Richard Saukko galloped his chalk-white Arabian horse named Traveler around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum almost 56 years ago, it was supposed to be a one-time stunt.

Instead, the brief performance before USC kicked off its season against Georgia Tech turned into one of college football’s iconic traditions. A succession of white horses named Traveler have followed — Traveler IX debuts this fall — trotting out of the tunnel as “Conquest” plays and the costumed Trojan warrior atop the horse waves a sword. But during a rally earlier this week to show solidarity in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., a USC campus group linked the name to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose favorite horse was Traveller.

But the intrepid Times reporter investigated and found that Traveler is not a very common name among horses:

But the name isn’t that common. According to Equibase, a leading source of horse racing statistics, there have been only three registered thoroughbreds named Traveler in the U.S. since 1945. Only two quarter horses have been registered

There is more, but you get the drift. Mr. Saukko’s widow brings a voice of sanity:

“The problem is this: maybe three weeks ago it was fine,” Pat Saukko DeBernardi said. “So now the flavor of the day is . . . we all have to be in hysteria. . . . It’s more of a political issue. The horse isn’t political and neither am I.”

Do you have to be crazy to be a liberal? I am starting to wonder.

“Black people who were never slaves
are fighting white people who were never Nazis
over a Confederate statue erected by democrats,
because democrats can’t stand their own history any more
and somehow it’s Trump’s fault?

Interesting.”

Las Vegas will need to change the name of a popular card game...
Jefferson Davis’ horse was named “Blackjack”.

In the 1974 game at LA's Memorial Coliseum, Notre Dame led Southern California 24-0 just before the end of the first half. Then, shockingly, SC scored 55 straight points in the next 17 minutes of action.

After every SC touchdown, one after the other, Traveler ran out of the tunnel behind ND's bench around to SC's, reared, and ran back again. After the game, ND coach Ara Parsegian (who died this week) said, "I hate that damned horse."

Was the horse racist? Did he have slave horses?

This is not about horses. It’s about the left feeling that it has the right to attack and destroy all the icons of this country, and anything that reminds them of the icons.

The name was common as I was growing up. Even a certain type of horse was called a Montana Traveler as if it was a breed, that organization floundered.

What the author of this does not understand is that breed registries only allow one horse to be registered with the same name at the same time. Think about it, how confusing would it be to have a horse race with 2 or 3 in the race with the same name? It would really be confusing if those horses sired foals...there would be no way for the breed registry to keep that straight.

I remember lots of horses named Traveler years ago, you can name a horse whatever you want but may not be able to use that to register the horse if they already have one registered with that name. I have never lived in the South, horses I knew named Traveler were named that because they were good traveling horses. Imagine that.

Wow. I just discovered that WILLIAM Blount of North Carolina attested his name to the draft Constitution in 1787. He was the first senator from a slave-holding state, Tennessee!

President Clinton’s first name is also WILLIAM. AND his middle name is Jefferson, a well known slaveholder.

Therefore, all memory, reference and statues of William Jefferson Clinton should be excised from history.

Ipso facto.

Reminds me: What is the difference between a horse race and a political race in California?

In a horse race the entire horse runs.

If that is true, they spelled it wrong. Should have been Traveller.

Liberals really don't know what the hell they are. They just know that they're against a bunch of stuff and that they're for a bunch of other stuff. They're not deep thinking intellectuals like they think they are. In fact, they're provably quite the opposite. Just look at the mixed bag of bad consequences that always ensue when liberal policies are put in place. It's empirical proof of their nincompoopishness. Crazy? I don't know, but incompetent and gullible in the extreme? YES!

Traveler rides in to the tune of “Conquest”, from the movie Captain From Castile. The movie told the story of the European conquest of Mexico.

Now...how’s that for politically incorrect?

I am shocked and dismayed by the flippant reaction of some to this extremely important story which is further compounded by the report which followed it:

UPDATE: Ed Driscoll notes another strong contender, although I think the Travel exposé still takes the prize. In the Atlantic, Alice Ristroph laments the path of the total solar eclipse:

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3 p.m. local time. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.

Presumably, this is not explained by the implicit bias of the solar system.

Whew! You had me wondering for a minute there, Alice.[end]

Good grief is the entire universe conspiring to make me ashamed I am a white American?
