Asked about players who did not stand for the national anthem before preseason games, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that while the playing of the anthem is a special moment to him, we also have to understand the other side.
Goodell made the comments at University of Phoenix Stadium during a 45-minute question-and-answer period with Arizona Cardinals club seat holders. One season ticket-holder, Bruce Olson, asked the commissioner whether players were going to continue to protest during the anthem and if anything could be done about it.
Its one of those things where I think we have to understand that there are people that have different viewpoints, Goodell said. The national anthem is a special moment to me. Its a point of pride. But we also have to understand the other side, that people do have rights and we want to respect those.
Thats the answer thats getting all the coverage, but supposedly there was a follow-up question (which I still cant find a video for) where he modified his response, saying that while he respects the rights of the players to protest, theres a time and a place for it. It seemed to be an indication that on the field right before a game starts was not that time or place.
Perhaps hell prove me wrong, but at this point Im convinced that this is a beast that Roger Goodell simply doesnt want to wrestle with. Hell offer his take on it, but leave the individual teams hanging in terms of what they should do. And most of them will fear the backlash if they clamp down on the protests, so the sport will suffer further declines in viewership as fans grow increasingly annoyed over the politicization of the greatest sport on Earth.

“I think we have to understand that there are people that have different viewpoints”
Doesn’t Goodell realize that free speech is dead in America?
Maybe he got Antifa to approve his position.
There’s “only one side,” Goodell. You piece of corporate s***.
All these Pro sports guys are all terrified of the black athlete.
I guess he finally got hid orders from Robert Kraft.
If I were a coach, and one of these spoiled bastards did that in front of MY TEAM, he would be out of a job and the c-sucker could go to court and fight for his money.
I dont care if it was a player like Rodgers or whoever.
the sound of an employer abdicating responsibility
Eventually he’ll just order the NFL to stop playing the National Anthem before games, which was the original goal of Kaepernick.
It’s like this, punk. Your players will respect their fans and their country, or they won’t be playing and you won’t have a league.
Real damn simple.
2017 NFL = Off.
Funny how corporate America isn’t so “objective” when Christians or others with views which go against the pc narrative express their views even on their own time, much less on company time.
Goodel will go down in sports history as the cuck who destroyed the NFL by being a gigantic pussy. The American middle class is pissed off at the Democrat Party, leftists, SJWs, and the gay mafia and they will take out their wrath on an NFL that is campaigning against them. Football isn’t a necessity, there are substitutes.
Goodell is a disgrace.
When the NFL is no longer economically viable as the result of pi$$ing-off fans, the owners of worthless franchises will have no one but themselves to blame.
It the NFL tries to eliminate the National Anthem from their games then they will have signed their death warrant as a profitable enterprise.
We do have to understand the other side. The other side is racist - anti-white, anti-American, anti-police, and anti-freedom. If the NFL is willing to give the other side a voice, then they can do so without my support, my dollars, and my viewership. I do not support evil.
Let some player kneel or sit . Just keep the NFL cameras off of him . Does anybody hear it if a bear $hits in the woods , or something?
Vote your wallet....avoid the NFL.
“But we also have to understand the other side, that people do have rights and we want to respect those.”
NFL players disrespecting the American flag and national anthem do so while in NFL uniforms.
Playing for an NFL team.
On an NFL field.
During an NFL event.
During an NFL licensed broadcast.
They can only do these things with the approval of the NFL.
Get rid of them. The NFL, I mean.
