Chargers players finding tough time to rent in Irvine, CA

Black residents of Irvine? They’re virtually nonexistent. Yet, even if Mebane had known the African-American population in Irvine was 1.8 percent, he wouldn’t have been concerned. He was a football player with multiple multimillion-dollar contracts behind him.

“For us,” Mebane said, “it was just find the right place where we would be comfortable.”

The signs that renting a home in Irvine could be a problem came early.

Mebane’s Realtor took him and his wife to several homes, only to face icy receptions. During one visit, Mebane extended his hand to greet an owner who extended his in return — while turning his head away.

“You could feel the tension without people saying anything, and you could just tell they didn’t want us there,” Mebane said. “They were probably surprised that we were African-Americans, and they bought into all the negative stereotypes.”

Mebane and his wife eventually fell in love with a home that was right across the street from a park, which was perfect for their kids, 3-year-old Mahailey and 1-year-old Makai.

They set out to put together the rental application, with Amena, a lawyer, looking over all the details. Their credit score, in the 800s, was excellent. They amassed multiple recommendation letters that praised their character.

The Mebanes were turned down. The reason they were given?

“They told us the other applicant had a credit score that was four points higher,” Mebane said, rolling his eyes. “You can’t say we won’t rent to you because you’re black, because you’ll get sued. I know the real reason. I could handle it better if the people were just honest.”

Learning how to be a landlord takes years.
I do not rent to trash.
That said i have rented too all flavors here in silicon valley.
It is a good time to be into rentals in the bay area.

What a bunch of partisan, whiney CR*P.

Absolute nonsense.

There are LOADS of Asians in Irvine, and lots and lots of Latinos.

Loads. The reason there are not a lot of African Americans there is, real estate is HUGELY expensive there.

That said, it hasn’t stopped the Asians, and Latinos.

What a bunch of whiney cr*p.

Absolute nonsense. Whites are in fact in a minority there, I believe.

The entire state of California, is flipping over.

This is so infuriating.

Were they looking in LA, they wouldn’t have any difficulty.

Irvine is worried about their pseudo-intellectual image.

Same city that Rampage Jackson lived in. For those that don’t know, he’s a black mixed martial arts fighter.

Irvine’s only real racism is primarily perpetrated by the Chinese residents against any non-Chinese, but even that’s not too prevalent.

Total BS story.

Demand for housing is extremely tight in Irvine.

There is a waiting list for rentals in Irvine and surrounding areas.

Buy a home? Be prepared to pay over list price. I know because I sold my Irvine home for $51k over list last June.

After reading the comments, I’m convinced that the most ignorant, racist culture in the history of mankind is the urban American black.

Were they looking in LA,...

I don't think you understand the geographical sprawl of Southern California.

There is the LA city limits proper, and then there is LA.

The term LA encompasses far more than just the city map boundries that confine it.

Unless you want to get knit-picky about it.....

I understand it fully, but you are hanging on generality.

The rest of the country uses the term LA to cover everything south of the Tehachapi.

That area is very Asian, and there are a lot of Asians who have bought investment properties. I would bet the landlords were of that ethnicity—they are very racist.

Just like “Dallas” is pretty much just north of Waco all the way to the Oklahoma border.
