Lost 33 pounds and had a little more to go. Have been working with a local health and wellness program and monitored dieting.
Very happy and dropped two clothing sizes. Going to try to drop another size or two. I have decided to be a little too little than a little too big.
Using low to moderate calorie high protein, moderate fate low carb diet.
Your diet tips always welcome.
as a former vegan who put on mucho pounds on the nuts berries and tofu and whole grains diet, I must say, protein fat low carb work for me.
“Well I am starting the recumbent bike soon.”
I’ve lost 45 lbs so far, and I can thank Mrs. VanShuyten for getting the combo step walker/recumbent bike. She does the step walker, and I do the bike, which is a lot easier on my knees and bad hip. I do 15 min in the morning at medium resistance (now, after a year) while lifting light weights, plus another 5 minutes of wind sprints. I do an hour at low resistance at night after everything else is finished. Riding the bike allows me to read, watch TV, or play games at the same time, so it doesn’t get too tedious. When I first started, I reset my metabolism by strictly reducing carbs, and started losing weight fairly quickly. I then plateaued out at about -40 lbs for several months. Some of that was adding more muscle mass, and some of it was starting to eat more snacks. Now I’m slowly starting to lose again, and my morning blood sugar is just about normal. Another 10 lbs, and I’ll be happy, although I’m already pretty happy that I can wear all that stuff that’s been in the corner of the closet for the last 15 years.
Keep spinning and good luck!
I will. I am not wearing old clothes, I am doing some focused buying of clothes so I can look good and feel happy. I actually flirted the other day.
Such great advice on this thread. During my initial weight loss, I switched from sugar to Splenda in my coffee, thinking I was doing a good thing. Turns out that none of that sweetener stuff is very good for you. So I learned to drink my coffee black. Black coffee is an acquired taste but well worth the effort.
I suggest going cold turkey on this and not doing it gradual. Within a couple weeks, you will learn to like black coffee and a few weeks after that, you won't want to drink it any other way. Trust me!
My wife is a wellness coach, and she has what she calls her “Bumper Sticker” diet: Moderation — Lean Protein — Fresh Vegetables...
Omit all flour(bread), pasta, sugar. She says almost anyone following this will lose weight.
I am one of those rare people on this planet
that is trying to GAIN weight.
I have no appetite and often forget to eat anything.
two weeks eh, well, if I can quit pizza and beer cold turkey, I can live without my coffeemate for a couple of weeks.
Ouch! That’s really harsh.
120 lb is not ‘fat’, ugly or not.

I ate at Chipotle and lost 35 pounds over the next two weeks as I sat on the can and Chipotled my guts out.
What is your fasting schedule? One day? Two? Three?
I used to fast when I was younger, but find it difficult these days. And I’ve really had trouble losing, even on a low-carb diet. Sigh...
33 lbs? What did you do? Take a bath?

+++++++++++++++++++++
I never thought their food was that good either. I was there the other day for a salad with meat and some salsa which cost a cool nine dollars the same as the loaded salad next to me. No thanks.
Low carb higher fat and daily 2 mile walk for me. I feel great and am down about 45lb. I just added the walking a few weeks ago.

I am trying to figure out how to take that comment. I am going to assume you mean that if floated away. It didn’t
I love fasting, I think it really gives your body digestive system a chance to rest. Sometimes I have a coffee with heavy cream and skip breakfast or I eat a decent low carb breakfast and skip lunch and not eat until dinner.
I want to get back to my original weight: 7lbs, 12 Oz. Just kidding. Lost 70 lbs ten years ago on Atkins. Gained most of it back. I’m a carb-a-holic. Best wishes to you!
The "burn off more than you consume" cliche is too simplistic and mostly an unhealthy way to approach things. Many fad diets are based on that. People gorging on grapefruit and putting carrots and such into blenders. That's no way to do it!
In 2003, and a determined FR archivist will find a lot of threads from me during that period, I lost over 100 pounds in a year. Basically it was switching to a high-fat, low-carb (sugar) diet. I also swore off anything with high fructose corn syrup and trans-fats (like margarine).
A lot of the stuff I was told to stop eating when I was fat actually helped me to take the fat off. Steak, eggs, cheese, nuts, etc. Those foods also gave my body a lot of energy so that I could adopt a more active lifestyle. I'm sure that helped too.
A few years after that, I gradually got back to old habits and the weight started coming back on rapidly. The main reason for that was that I initially banished foods from my diet that I loved like pizza and pasta. Once I started having them again, it was like an alcoholic locked in a liquor store.
I finally went back on the high-fat low-sugar diet for good, only now I allow a little bit of balance to include the occasional pizza or other "forbidden" food. Those occasional indulgences help me stay on track the rest of the time as now I don't feel like I'm always denying myself something. But some of the really bad foods out there, I don't even want to eat anymore, like packaged cookies, donuts and candy bars. Those I don't miss.
Congratulations!
:-)
My diet tip: keep cooked turkey bacon around for snacking.
“I fast between meals, does that count?”
Indeed it does help.
Insulin and other hormones are meant to go up and down. Snacking can keep insulin high which keeps metabolism in fat-storage mode. See Dr. Jason Fung for advice on balancing feeding and fasting cycles.
Once a week I fast 24 to 36 hours between meals because it works well for me. Dr. Valter Longo has an easier protocol that allows a small meal on “fasting” days.
