Multiple Republican senators broke with President Trump on Wednesday after he announced on Twitter than transgender troops would be banned from serving in the military.
In separate statements, GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Joni Ernst (Iowa), Richard Shelby (Ala.), and Orrin Hatch (Utah) all criticized Trump for his decision that Obama-era rules allowing transgender troops to serve would be reversed.
McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, ripped the call and said that Trump shouldn't be making policy announcements via tweet.
“The President’s tweet this morning regarding transgender Americans in the military is yet another example of why major policy announcements should not be made via Twitter," McCain wrote in his statement.
“The statement was unclear," he added. "The Department of Defense has already decided to allow currently-serving transgender individuals to stay in the military, and many are serving honorably today. Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving."
"There is no reason to force service members who are able to fight, train, and deploy to leave the military — regardless of their gender identity."

When the character is suspect already you don’t need to test it.

People should be happy he has shown his colors so they can vote him out. They should have plenty of time to organize that.
Good list to go by. Cornyn is my least favorite though I think. I just have a deep personal disliking of the creep. When I lived in Texas I ran into him at a distance once and thought it would be better if I did not meet him face-to-face. I find him disgusting and reprehensible. He is an insult to decent men.
Are any of them up for re-election in 2018, so we can Primary them out?
I know Hatch is up for re-election this cycle.

Sen. Richard Shelby is getting a letter and with all of the military in this state, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got more than one.
The change in policy is fine, and is almost certainly within his constitutional powers.
The issue is that he seems to have announced this by Tweet without consulting anyone or notifying the Pentagon. There’s a story today that people in the Pentagon waited nine minutes between Tweet #1 and Tweet #2 to learn what the President was ordering. A withdrawal from Afghanistan? An invasion of North Korea?
And no one knows what it means. Are current soldiers going to be discharged? What’s the process for that?
This is a repeat of the travel ban where they were literally making up the rules as they went along for the first day. For a while, no one knew if citizens overseas were banned from returning.
From what I’ve read, she’s opposed to providing surgery and she may be on board with preventing enlistment going forward. Her issue is with current personnel.
I still don’t know what the policy is there.
However, it is easy for them to posture in advance of legislation, then become spineless linguini what it's time to stand up, vote and be counted. Just look at Obamacare repeal -- seven years of posturing, chest-thumping, and braying about repeal. That got us the House, Senate, and Presidency. But, when it's time to do the deed, they all turn tail and run.
I harbor no doubts that if legislation is introduced to prevent mentally ill trannies from serving from the military it will be solidly voted down. If a miracle happens and it passes, it'll be challenged in the courts for years. Our "side" works against us and the serious interests of the nation time after time after time.
More proof that multiple GOP senators are fools.

So, how many transgender people currently serve in the military?
Well, a 2016 RAND Corporation study showed that of the approximately 1.3 million people who are considered active-duty members of the military in 2014, about 2,450 of them are transgender, making up about just 0.1-0.5 percent of the active-duty military. In addition, it’s estimated that about 1,510 transgender people serve in the Selected Reserve.
As far as future estimates, the study predicted that about 40-190 military personnel would seek gender transition per year, 30-140 would seek hormone therapy per year and 25-130 would seek actual surgical treatment a year.

For me thr take home point is that ~5% would seek surgery in a year and the same number start hormone therapy. How will this affect their ability to serve to full capacity. This is an issue that that these service people should resolve in the pivate sector, outside of the military.

Reading the article the process can usually take several years, cost ten thousand or more for surgery, $100 a month for hormone treatments, not to mention counseling. In the mean time they are to be treated as any other soldier requiring medical attention. When the hell do these clowns get down to doing actual soldering before their term of enlistment is up?
