OH, ELON. BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE HYPERLOOP DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT

Is this … is this really happening?

On Wednesday morning, Elon Musk made a strange announcement on Twitter: His Boring Company (yes, that's what it's called) had received “verbal government approval” to build an underground hyperloop, he said. The maglev-powered train thing would pass through New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore before terminating in good old swampy Washington, DC. All in twenty-nine minutes.

It sounded momentous—but “verbal government approval” isn’t a thing. A White House spokesperson said the administration had conducted “positive conversations” with Musk and Boring Company executives, but declined to comment beyond that.

... Man, I'm so immature, I'm still stuck on the concept that someone named their company ‘The Boring Company.’

And yeah, guess what, verbal permission means, umm, yeah, just like the permission, I got nothing.

He did it! He hacked the super secret design for the flux capacitor. Dang, I thought the PRC were the only ones who got that.

Silicon Valley players are trying to outdo one another over who pushes more grandiose project. Elon Musk looks like a front runner. He is overleveraging. At some point, many of them will crash.

Verbal permission is worth the paper it is written on.

Still, I like that better than something named, ‘The Holey
Company”.

Back in the early 70s I once worked for Bortunco. which is the boring tunneling Company of America. Road boring is all around you it’s how cities expand they bore holes under roads to run new sewer lines and power lines and water lines it’s everywhere it’s not uncommon.

Is there a depth limit beyond which nobody can claim ownership?

These grandiose pronouncements demonstrate Musk like most dreamers is a bit touched. The reality is that the laws of physics are the final arbitrator. Whether you are building cars, rockets or people movers the reality of physical law intrudes on dreams. No industrial society can power itself economically with “green energy”.Tesla will require the burning of fossil fuels to power, construct the materials and assemble the electric cars. Without the hidden and overt government subsidies, the company is not sustainable.

Musk is not unlike the charismatic con artists that are known to periodically enthrall the American people. Such people do excite and inspire but unless their ideas are sound, little of substance is accomplished and the disappointment is huge. Predict that in ten years Musk will be buried in lawsuits and may end up facing criminal charges.

Big Dig 2.0

What was it, 20 years and $15B to tunnel a few miles under 1 city?

Chump change compared to this. If they suck this t*t for 50 years and spend $1T, I wouldn't be surprised.

I’m not sure about that I’ve never really thought about it, but most Road boring is shallow work usually no more than 30 feet deep.

He is turning himself into a giant human bubble. Too bad. I heard he was (and probably is) a brilliant computer programmer.

So what the paper is arguing is that even with the backing of the U.S. president, no grand thing can ever get done in America ever again.

If that gets built, there goes AMTRAK’s only profitable route. I guess they might partner with that company to use the tunnel though, like they do with the owners of other rail lines.

As long as he uses private money, a rational (non-corrupt) Government should be all for it.
