The video was shocking in Florida, where shocking videos seem like a genre. A group of teenagers laughed and watched as a man struggled in the water of a pond. The man drowned, and his body was not found for days.
The five teenagers did nothing to help him, not even call 911, but after examining the video, the authorities said this week that they did not break the law.
In the state of Florida, there is no law in place that requires a person to render aid or call to render aid to a victim in distress, Yvonne Martinez, a spokeswoman for the Cocoa Police Department, said on Friday.

I think in some states there’s what they call a “depraved heart offense”, when, IIRC, somebody dies because of somebody’s shocking indifference to human life.
They could gave at least called 911.

Dunn drowned on July 9 after reportedly arguing with his fiancee. A missing persons report was filed three days later and his body was recovered from the pond on July 14.
Besides, the way he cried out before he went down so suddenly he probably realized he had a crocodile snacking on his azz.
Since we don’t know anything about the 5 teenagers, let’s blame society right now for its’ “me first and don’t give a damn about others” attitude that is so pervasive in leftist circles.
In our conservative family, my son, as a federal police officer, gave first aid to two men who had fatal heart attacks after using the gym in a building he patrolled.
He was able to keep one alive lone enough to get him to the hospital. He family got to see the man before he passed away and thanked my son for doing all he could to save their father/husband.
He helped another man who had a fatal heart attack and died before any medical help could come.
Also, he got me to the hospital in a non-siren patrol car when I started going into cardiac arrest. He saved my life too.
My mothers used to help the homeless or sometimes just a person having a problem of some kind while shopping or just running errands. She made sure that these people got immediate attention. You did not argue with my mother and say “no I won’t do it”.
My daughter, about a month ago, found a homeless person out in the cold rain underneath a tree at the Arlington County Administration parking lot, being ignored by every one who walked by. My daughter, who worked for organizations that helped veterans (her brother is a veteran of Iraq and her husband is a veteran of both Iraq and Bosnia), got this sick man all the help that the county could muster, including dry clothes, food, medicine, etc.
You DO NOT refuse my daughter when she asks for help for someone. She can cut through the bullshit and the bureaucracy like Superwoman through a building. She is another member of my family who you do not piss off.
I’ve had liberal attorney cousins who actually did some good in helping abused women and the struggling poor (no matter who they were). My cousin Richard won a Guggenheim Award for winning a court case that gave the very destitute badly needed survival aid that the City of Baltimore refused to give before. That city is still a shithole of black leftist incompetents, but Richard left his mark in helping the poor.
My uncle, grandfather and father took care of relatives who had financial problems, supported educational institutions (one of which is now getting third generation donations from me, and hopefully my son after I’m gone). These donations started in the 1930’s and never stopped even after each had passed away. The family took them up.
We were taught to do this as a moral duty. In Yiddish it is called a “mitzvah”, “good deed”, something you do if you can, even if it puts a burden on you.
It’s the old biblical command to help those who need it.
Apparently some of our younger generation is losing this basic “Judaeo-Christian” charitable ethic, as seen in this tragic drowning case.
Unless our synagogues, churches, mosques, and temples can promote this theme of helping others, our society will decline further into a godless morass of selfishness and social isolation.
The Clinton Foundation and the Obama Travel The World Vacations at taxpayers expenses are just adjuncts of this selfish attitude that is too common today.
The rot starts at the top with morally and ethically corrupt politicians and academics, spreads through some religious institutions, down in our school systems and out onto the “street”.
These five bastards deserve jail time and a “shaming” that will put them haunt them for years until they do some kind of repentance.
They broke the laws of human decency. While not actionable; karma is a real bear.
What was the name of that movie where a bunch of kids miraculously escaped death in a plane or train accident but then the grim reaper started looking for them one by one correcting the mistake?
I think it was called Final Destination but I’m not sure. It has been a lot of years since I watched it.
These kids should really watch their back and keep their heads on a swivel. Probably won’t prevent karma from catching up but at least they might see it coming. That’s something at least.
Might be something as simple as a civil suit by the family against them which if they lost would mean they would be paying on it for the rest of their life probably. Assuming they make any money above board.
[These five bastards deserve jail time]
Works for me.
“As detectives investigated the death over the weekend, a family member of Mr. Dunns alerted them to the video, which the teenagers had begun sharing with friends.”
The “teenagers” should have their drivers licenses revoked or denied for five years...No, wait...Make that 10 years.
They showed themselves to be jerks, laughing and cussing at the man. They showed no concern over his plight and didn’t even call 911.
While someone with no training might be smart to avoid jumping in to help, it is the callous attitude and not calling 911 at the least that is disturbing to me.
Just generalizing, in many cases its lack of parenting, the schools, and a secular society that makes people feel totally disconnected to others, with no conscience and no drive to do good.
In this case it’s Florida and sure, maybe they should not have gone in the water with the dangers, but to think of multiple kids not calling 911 is pretty sad.
Boy oh boy, that's the truth!
I saw an incident of this many years ago on Miami Beach.
I saw a useful product on a web site a few years ago... a guy had made some tiny devices that you could throw to someone in trouble. They would inflate into a small flotation device when they were in the water...I suppose they had some sort of chemical that expanded to inflate the device or maybe a C02 cartridge.
BTW: Wouldn't a guy be so proud if one of those worthless Hooligans was his kid :-/
It seems that G_d has blessed you with a wonderful son and daughter!
Shalom my FRiend.
Glad you mentioned the word “conscience”. Less and less our teenagers have them or are taught about them.
You’re right about this major cause of the degeneration of our once civil society.
Pretty sure our country’s founders did not envision an atheistic, drug-addled, tattooed/pierced society, but perhaps a force for good will prevail, nevertheless.
I like to think it was Mr. Dunn’s time to meet his Maker and the five young men were there to record the event.
If this isn’t evidence that we live in a post-Christian society, I don’t know what is.
I’d like them identified so we can ensure they never have a chance to participate in human society.
If they had been White this would be all over the papers and TV. Black on Black, and it’s nothing.
He walked into the pond with all his clothes on after arguing with his girlfriend. Apparent suicide, although he may have regretted it, was swearing and yelling for help.
Imagine if the teenagers were white......
I wonder how many FReepers had to do a search for L&L
