I understand the sentiment but you might want to consider that Canada imports more from the U.S.A. than China, Japan or the European Union.
The balance of our trade is not exactly a problem for your country. And the most likely consequence of cutting back on Canadian exports to the U.S. will be (as he says) tit for tat protectionist measures cutting down on your exports to us.
This whole trade thing is not as simplistic as some might imagine. But I agree with Trump that you have some lousy trade deals with China and Mexico in particular (so do we, I think). The original free trade deal that was just between Canada and the U.S. had mutual benefits, it was when Mexico was included in NAFTA that things went south.
As to why he was there, I think the governors invited him, but he might have just got off the Aga Khan’s yacht in Newport.
I don’t support the guy or his politics but any conservative Canadian politician would be in favor of free trade between our two countries. I do think there is a lose-lose option as well as win-lose and win-win outcomes, smart trade is what we need rather than free trade. But if you think the way forward is to expect other countries to take more of your stuff and send less of theirs, that’s not going to happen in the real world, it will just turn into less of theirs and less of yours. Every job you create by banning imports will be offset by jobs lost to lost exports, and in particular with Canada, we don’t have a bad balance of trade at this point.

Maybe Trump should make a trip to Canada and make a pitch for something Canadians no longer understand: national pride.
