Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told governors from across the US to ditch the "America First" motto.
His National Governors' Association speech in Rhode Island on Friday was a first for a Canadian prime minister.
In his speech, Mr Trudeau urged US governors to embrace their neighbour to the north and avoid protectionism.
It is all a part of his aggressive strategy to promote a "thinner border" ahead of vital trade talks with the US renegotiating the Nafta treaty.
President Donald Trump has made "America First" his mantra, shaping his policies on trade and immigration.
But Mr Trudeau, who is a fierce advocate of free trade, told the governors protectionist policies "kill growth".
"And that hurts the very workers these measures are nominally intended to protect. Once we travel down that road, it can quickly become a cycle of tit-for-tat, a race to the bottom, where all sides lose," Mr Trudeau said.
"If anything, we would like a thinner border, not a thicker one."

What was this leaf even doing here? And lecturing our leaders?
US governors collude with foreign governments to undermine US interests.
Good. Let’s personalize it. It’s the litmus test. America first or not, govnah?
What he’s really saying is, “Bend back over and take it up the keister again, bitch!”
+1.
What a precious little socialist he is!
Didn’t this a-hole agree to pay millions of $$ to a muzzie murderer? He’s just another know-it-all NOTHING who needs to butt out of America’s politics!
By the way, he can also KMA.
Build the (northern) wall!
Eh?
CA....
“If anything, we would like a thinner border, not a thicker one.”
He hasn’t been listening carefully has he?
This action is clearly more dangerous to US policy making, than is "meddling with elections."
These elected officials, who are soliciting influence from a foreign government agent, have the power to make policy.
MACL!
For “Free Trade” to be truly “free” - a state or a country has to have a right to opt out...
What Trudeau is discussing here is “forced trade”
MCLA!
I understand the sentiment but you might want to consider that Canada imports more from the U.S.A. than China, Japan or the European Union.
The balance of our trade is not exactly a problem for your country. And the most likely consequence of cutting back on Canadian exports to the U.S. will be (as he says) tit for tat protectionist measures cutting down on your exports to us.
This whole trade thing is not as simplistic as some might imagine. But I agree with Trump that you have some lousy trade deals with China and Mexico in particular (so do we, I think). The original free trade deal that was just between Canada and the U.S. had mutual benefits, it was when Mexico was included in NAFTA that things went south.
As to why he was there, I think the governors invited him, but he might have just got off the Aga Khan’s yacht in Newport.
I don’t support the guy or his politics but any conservative Canadian politician would be in favor of free trade between our two countries. I do think there is a lose-lose option as well as win-lose and win-win outcomes, smart trade is what we need rather than free trade. But if you think the way forward is to expect other countries to take more of your stuff and send less of theirs, that’s not going to happen in the real world, it will just turn into less of theirs and less of yours. Every job you create by banning imports will be offset by jobs lost to lost exports, and in particular with Canada, we don’t have a bad balance of trade at this point.
GFY, Trudeau.
Maybe Trump should make a trip to Canada and make a pitch for something Canadians no longer understand: national pride.
CannaDuh....
Canada?
Like France, Canada was
Hey Justin, take off hoser, eh?
