At what point does a graphic novel become pornographic? The English Departments that assign them dont seem to care.
"For example, Ursinus College assigns the widely acclaimed and controversial Fun Home by Alison Bechdel in undergraduate literature courses, Shannon Watkins, a policy associate at the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal writes. Bechdel's graphic novel is written as memoir, and discusses her experiences growing up in a dysfunctional family."
"The reader follows Bechdel as she learns about her fathers homosexuality and her lesbianism. Bechdel's graphic novel is written as memoir, and discusses her experiences growing up in a dysfunctional family."
"Another graphic novel, Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick, also is a popular choice on university syllabi and has been described as an 'intersectionally feminist text.' The book is about 'a womans failure to comply with her patriarchal overlords.'"
"Of course, there is nothing inherently wrong with reading about these topics or with discussing them," Watkins avers. "But what is particularly concerning about assigning these politically charged books is that it seems to be part of a larger push to rid the university of its traditional focus, and to push a social justice agenda."
Ya think? How did we miss these tomes at the Modern Language Association? Perhaps they blended in too well with the scenery.
You mean rearn, rearning english etc?
Graphic novel = comic book.
Just leaning around, writing blogs...
Derpa herpa derp-de-derp.
What is that? Planet of the Amazons with really bad attitudes?
My arguement was that Classic Comics made classic literature introduction easier...didn’t fly.
...but, for full effect, can only be read once a month for a period of about five-to-seven days ...
For some people (and academics are heavily represented here), it’s just not “real culture” unless it focuses on perversion.
Charles Dickens? Not real culture.
William Faulkner? Not real culture.
WB Yeats? Not real culture.
Some-guy-you’ve-never-heard-of-but-who-is-really-proud-of-his-homoexuality? Well, that’s Art, baby!!
A planet inhabited only by dogs in heat?
Magwitch had already given Pip the greatest gift he possibly could............an education...................
“A planet inhabited only by dogs in heat?”
No, that’s Buzzfeed you’re thinking of.
Is your real name Jake Taylor?
“Small co-educational liberal arts college” located in Collegeville, PA. Montgomery County in the burbs west of Philly. I grew up on a farm three miles away and went to junior high and high school a mile from the campus. After active duty, I did half a semester at Ursinus and dropped out after deciding I needed more decompression time back in San Diego. A former president was a family friend in the 50’s and 60’s and Ursinus was a pretty conservative school that had high academic entrance standards. Now I guess its just like all the rest albeit a good bit more expensive.
The only college class that should allow comic books as a possible learning tool might be graphic arts.
No wonder everybody is such a dumbass lately, required reading in college is pornographic comic books.
LOL! Had to look that one up
Not a chance in hell...70yrs old...and all that entails.
Give you the benefit of a doubt and take it as a compliment????
