“On this day (August 23) in 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union sign a non-aggression pact, stunning the world, given their diametrically opposed ideologies.”

NAZI = National Socialism
Stalinism = International Socialism (aka: Communism)

No diametric opposition there.

You should ask for your money back for that course. Stalin was the reason hitler got as far as he did. Stalin was warned by his generals that the invasion was coming and did nothing. Winter stopped hitler not stalin

I’m just glad to see that it is not an American poll.

Greatly helped? Stalin started purging the military officer corp in October of 1940, the Germans invaded June of the following year.

Stalin started killing military officers in the 1930’s.

From the Russians perspective Stalin saved the nation from Nazism. He was a very bad person but even Roosevelt worked with him to win the war. Russia lost 20 Million souls and Damn near lost the war. Arguably if not for Stalin Hitler would have literally taken over the world. enemies are relative.

I’d certainly rather be dealing with Putin than Stalin. Where did Nikita Khrushchev place?

Patton should have been allowed to kick that b*stard Stalin and the Soviets back to their borders.

“All that I wanted to do was simply mention how Stalin’s lead of resisting the Germans (with help from the famous Russian winter, of course) assisted in creating that positive perception of him, despite the many other very bad things that took place under his rule.”

I’m not disagreeing with you. That said, changing a few words above, I could have the definition of “battered women syndrome”.

“but it was also mentioned that he greatly helped the Russians resist German aggression and occupation in World War II.”

Blocking battalions and threats of execution will do that.

To say nothing of what happened to Russians that were in German occupied areas after they were liberated.

How many American lives would you have been willing to sacrifice to accomplish that objective.

One tactic that Stalin and the other Communist leadership used during WWII was the use of the term “Mother Russia”. It was always about saving Mother Russia, not saving Communism.

When Stalin died, many people who were put into the Gulags, cried.

I agree with your question. By May, 1945, the US Army in Europe was very tired and worn out. Besides, the Japs were still to be dealt with and many Army divisions were scheduled to head to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan.

“During the 1890s Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov was looking at salivation in dogs in response to being fed, when he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever he entered the room, even when he was not bringing them food.”

Really? The Red Army had 5 times as many men under arms than we did. Their T34 tanks were vastly superior to our Shermans. The American people wouldn’t have tolerated it at the time.
