Camille Paglia Blames Dems for Destroying Journalism — ‘It Is Going to Take Decades to Recover’
Breitbart ^ | 6/21/2017 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 06/21/2017 6:37:16 AM PDT by simpson96

Tuesday on Sean Hannity’s nationally syndicated radio show, author and University of the Arts professor of humanities and media studies Camille Paglia railed against the current state of journalism in America.

Paglia called what she said the Democratic Party had done to journalism “absolutely grotesque” and warned it would take decades to recover.

“It’s obscene,” she said. “It’s outrageous, OK? It shows that the Democrats are nothing now but words and fantasy and hallucination and Hollywood. There’s no journalism left. What’s happened to The New York Times? What’s happened to the major networks? It’s an outrage.”

“I’m a professor of media studies, in addition to a professor of humanities, OK?” she continued. “And I think it’s absolutely grotesque the way my party has destroyed journalism. Right now, it is going to take decades to recover from this atrocity that’s going on where the news media have turned themselves over to the most childish fraternity, kind of buffoonish behavior.”

She is the kind of Lefty you might not agree with, but you could at least be civil and have some sort of social interaction with.....She is a rare bird nowadays.

If you really feel that way, Camille, why is it still your party?

Journalism has become propaganda. The Left couldn’t resist the temptation to use it as a tool to advance their socialist agenda and destroy all things conservative. In the process, they have destroyed what was once known as the venerable Fourth Estate.

She’s a leftist who is honest on the subject of what the media is and how the media works. I wonder how she came to be like that.

‘destroying journalism’

The only way to ever really restore journalism will be to fully and completely destroy the pushers of fake news — broadcast and print/internet/web — by discrediting them, their sources, their publications.

The pushers of fake news need to be reclassified as entertainment or something similar and any pretext of them being journalists needs to be removed — press passes, etc.

The recently reseating of CNN at a White House event was a tiny start. It signaled that CNN should no longer be considered a reliable news agency. The WH just didn’t go far enough. The WH should pull their ‘press credentials’ and kick them out of the WH.

Purveyors of fake news should be mandated to put warning labels at the top of their wares (articles/reports/videos, etc.). Sixty years ago, tv ‘news’ sources were required to label ‘commentary’ as such and separate from real ‘news’.

It seems that they, like political parties, are destined or determined to move leftward.

FoxNews Channel of 15 years ago is not the FoxNews Channel of today. They have 'quit dancing with the ones who brought them this far' by becoming another version of CNN/MSNBC. Just like the Dem and Pubbie parties are not the parties of JFK or Reagan.

There is something -- maybe the water, more likely the bank accounts -- that cause institutions to move to the left.

The destruction of journalism may have started in the 1970s, with “Operation Mockingbird”!!!!! And remember the Goebbels-like lies against the Serbs “way back” in 1999!!!

This destruction has accelerated in recent years, with the vast majority of journalistic output being fake news!!!!

Journos are our enemies!!!!! We need to search far and wide over the Internet—even to so-called “conspiracy” sites like InfoWars—to find even a bit of real news!!!! Then there is RT—really!!!!

It will never recover. It’s credibility has been destroyed, and now it’s financial base is crumbling.

I agree - print and television will not ever recover... not in the sense of getting back to what it was [omnipresent and powerful.]

Way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and it was a somewhat reliable source, early '80's, the USA Today reported every week the ratings for TV shows and Network Evening News ratings. The ratings for each network Evening News program was around 15 million viewers.

Now their viewers are around 15 million...TOTAL!

Network news programs are headed in the same direction as the afternoon newspapers.

Just as TV doomed those newspapers with an evening news program, the Networks are doomed by the internet.

N. Theknow...proud sponsor/donor of FR on a monthly basis.

How about you?

Interesting that she and Michael Goodwin (in Imprimis) said much the same thing.

IIRC there was a thread to that fine publication of Hillsdale College (https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/2016-election-demise-journalistic-standards/).

Who, what, when, where and how; that’s what I want, and ALL I want from any journalistic source. If they feel they have to add the ‘why’ then do it on the darned editorial page, I can figure that out for myself just fine.

It reminds me of a 3 year old throwing a tantrum. They actually think it brings positive attention, when no, people just see a pathetic tantrum for what it is.

They seem to believe we’ve all such a short memory that we’ve forgotten the last election cycle and all of the emails revealing the media-to-media & DNC collusion. Everything we ever suspected confirmed. Surely they realize they’ve been exposed and nobody believes them anymore - but they don’t behave as though this is the case. They seem to think that “turning up the volume”, increasing the rhetoric, and doing “more of the same” (which may have worked in the past) is a formula to change minds. After all, many of them have admitted, openly, that it’s their job to influence and change opinion - when it isn’t.

Bottom line, they really think we’re all that stupid and they’re that smart. That’s the only explanation for this level of arrogance. Maybe in years past when people had few outlets for information their tactics worked. Today, I can get a dozen opinions instantly before I ever turn on CNN to see the nonsense they’re spewing. I literally check CNN to chuckle at their narrative, it’s like they really believe it - it’s impressive theater, I’ll give them that...but that’s all it is. Surely it’s depressing for them seeing that the results of this hysteria is just more losing. You’d think the light bulb would go off, but they’re too stupid to realize they’re galvanizing existing opinions.

Before the election I’d never have thought that the Dems would be so destroyed. Obama was radioactive and with loony leadership, a pathetically exposed media, along with no future candidates the party is in shambles. All self inflicted.

We should stop calling them “journalists”. NBC is finding out that calling yourself a journalist doesn’t make you one. Ref: Megyn Kelly.

Journalism has always been biased.

The difference is that in the past there were at least two (or more) newspapers in every town of any size. They did not hide their bias, look at old newspapers and you will see names that include REPUBLICAN or DEMOCRAT on the mast head.

As someone else posted, they will never recover.

They are in someways similar to the Pony Express. Technology will make newspapers obsolete.

There is still a need for “news gatherers” but here is the great secret, anyone can create content.

When I hear of a big story I turn to two places - YouTube and FreeRepublic.

Often YouTube has raw images before many news outlet (and when the major outlets do catch on, they are using the same YouTube videos I had been watching).

FreeRepublic provides more information on stories PLUS has thousands of “experts” available to provide information the media leaves out or explains it better.

Newspaper, who needs them.

The Left will keep doubling down. More competition is needed to “fix it”.

The Left and Hollywood are perfect together, neither deals in reality.

It is not about recovery. The press has always been biased. But pre-tv/radio there was more competition to keep them honest. Most towns had more than one newspaper.

Today, the Left media behaves like a cartel. There is limited competition and they control the message. The alphabets get a total 20 million viewers for the evening news. Nobody else comes close.

Create the opportunity for more competition by stop funding the Left media cartel.

Stop buying national brands, buy local, generic only
Stop eating at national chain restaurants, eat at local, family owned restaurants
Cut your cable tv, the Left media cartel gets a check even if you do not watch their channels. They are all in the basic bundle and get a subscriber fee.

Rush does with his radio broadcasts. He's appx 20 million daily also.

It is true that print and tele media have always been biased - but they can no longer "get away with it" b/c internet. They still haven't learned it.

So until they become unbiased, they'll not stop the bleeding. AND they will never "recover" b/c public has too many options in consuming media. The only way they do well is to be unbiased. Even with that, it'll be years of honest reporting [likely a generation] before print and tv media will begin to regain any trust.

This FReeper says that ain't happening.

I wonder why Obama didn’t try to shut down the internet while he had his 8 year window of opportunity.

Maybe because his good buddy Al invented it?

Maybe because he figured his good buddy Hillary was going to win in 2016 in spite of it?
