Road Trip: Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico

Cannon Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base, located approximately 7 miles southwest of Clovis, New Mexico. It is under the jurisdiction of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The host unit at Cannon is the 27th Special Operations Wing (27 SOW), which activated on 1 October 2007, and is assigned to the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).

The 27 SOW plans and executes specialized and contingency operations using advanced aircraft, tactics and air refueling techniques to infiltrate and resupply special operations forces (SOF) and provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and close air support in support of SOF operations.

The 27th Special Operations Group is one of four groups assigned to the 27th Special Operations Wing. The group accomplishes global special operations taskings as an Air Force component member of the United States Special Operations Command.

It conducts infiltration/exfiltration, combat support, helicopter and tilt-rotor aerial refueling, psychological warfare and other special missions. It directs the deployment, employment, training and planning for seven squadrons that operate the CV-22 Osprey, AC-130W Stinger II, MC-130J, MQ-1B Predator, MQ-9 Reaper, and various light and medium transport aviation.

The 27th Special Operations Maintenance Group is composed of the 27th Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 27th Special Operations Component Maintenance Squadron, 27th Special Operations Equipment Maintenance Squadron and the 27th Special Operations Maintenance Operations Squadron. There are approximately 420 personnel assigned to the group.

The 27 SOMXG vision of "The Power in Airpower!" is accomplished daily through innovation, teamwork, integrity and professionalism. The group supports the aircraft of the 27th Special Operations Wing through integrated maintenance support of the AFSOC mission.

I was there when the F-111s and EF-111s were there. Cannon AFB could boast that there was a pretty girl behind every tree...

And a 6 hour drive in any direction would get you somewhere nice...

She only slobbers when we are out and there are other dogs around. (Thank Goodness she doesn’t do it indoors!)

It’s so funny...they are like two long strings on each side of her mouth, and when she tries to shake her head to dislodge them, they wrap around her snout like twine.

My daughter is currently stationed there. Soon to be transferring to Hulbert Field. She’s ground crew for C-130’s.

Strangely enough, my wife and I just got back from dinner with her. She and some co workers were in town for some training at Little Creek.

Yes, but there was only seven trees.

I went there for a few days to look at some of the big expansion they did across the main flight-line in 2011 through 2014. It was an interesting trip.

First of all, I really liked Clovis for a middle of no where town 90 minutes west of Lubbock. It was a big enough town twenty minutes away from the base and not entirely dependent on the base.

The base was another matter. First of all, my opinion was clouded as all the projects underway were on the far side of the flight line from everything on the base. So the government decides they are going to build 400 million in six hanger and ops buildings on the side of the flight line with no electricity, roads, telephone, com or anything. So not only do you have to build all the infrastructure as part of the project, you have none of those things to power your temporary facilities. Can you imagine having a 75 million dollar project you are trying to build with 400 people and you are working for two years off cell phones and generators.

They had an old busted up gal and six new hires running the Corps of Engineers office. When there was part of the plans or specs that needed clarification to bid the project economically her attitude was she couldn’t be bothered, “just bid it as you see it.” That meant you were screwed just put a lot of money in your bid.

Building huge hangers is tricky when everyday is a 20 to 40 mph dirt-storm. Its kind of hard to roof something 120 feet in the air and stay on schedule when you can only work one of two days a week due to safety concerns. Overall after talking to some of the builders already there trying to work, I said, NO THANKS.
