In a pair of affluent coastal California counties, the canary in the mineshaft has gotten splayed, spatchcocked and plated over a bed of unintended consequences, garnished with sprigs of locally sourced economic distortion and non-GMO, What the heck were they thinking?
The result of one early experiment in a citywide $15 minimum wage is an ominous sign for the states poorer inland counties as the statewide wage floor creeps toward the mark.
Consider San Francisco, an early adopter of the $15 wage. Its now experiencing a restaurant die-off, minting jobless hash-slingers, cashiers, busboys, scullery engineers and line cooks as they get pink-slipped in increasing numbers. And the wage there hasnt yet hit $15.
As the East Bay Times reported in January, at least 60 restaurants around the Bay Area had closed since September alone.

Wow, who could have predicted this?
Most of us know not to drop a radio into the bathtub while we’re in it. Liberals have to experience it for themselves before they’ll believe it’s not just a trick by the man to keep us all down. And then they still learn nothing.
Yep here come the robots, first the minimum wage workers and then right up the wage and salary scale. A machine that does the production or services of 20 human beings and requires no wage.
What will the wages in that free market economy be, $0.40 an hour?
What job is safe from being replaced by robots with advanced AI? Other than business owner I can’t think of any.
Although Disney did raise it’s prices, the daily population has risen a lot. So much so that they replaced the “red shirt” program seasonal work for retirees and hired people for year round jobs. Somehow people in this country are making money. Not sure how but they are enough to go to Disney at least.
Yeah, the total economic effect is negative- lost trade, activity, choice and opportunity.
But the short term ‘optics’ are great!
And only the short-term matters in the media.
Directive 10-289 in the flesh.
A recalibration, recalculation of the date of the Rapture that doesn't happen in 96 days.
That's a shame. Dishwasher, busboy, and line cook or prep assistant (VERY different from chef when I did it!) may not take much education, but they are great entry-level jobs that teach you a lot. I cannot imagine a better way to learn to be prompt, work hard, and value a good job than to start in one of those low skill positions.
No, you can't "support a family" on what a busboy is worth. However, you aren't supposed to still be a busboy by the time you have a family. What's really difficult is learning to earn a living that will support a family, without an opportunity to start in an entry-level position. Those who start with the basic work skills will be fine, but the rest will be unemployed for life. I suspect that is the outcome democrats are hoping for.
Lieberal politician hacks don’t care about facts and history of results. They will raise minimum wages come hell or high water because it’s the leftist way and they are the heroes to the downtrodden. That some businesses close and many lose their jobs is of no concern. It’s just collateral damage that they ignore and their cushy govt jobs are safe so long as enough dimbulb voters who lean DemoRat keep them in power. Hello Venezuela on the Pacific.
For those of us who have read it a couple of times.
libtards will blame the increase in unemployment on the evil restaurant owners for being too greedy, then blame Republicans for not wanting to increase welfare to support the unemployed
Since the beginning of time better tools have allowed people to be more productive. Automation is good as long as the nation is trying to be productive and build things and grow food for export. The problem we have is that our elites have been gutting our nation's technological and manufacturing base for years for short term profits.
While some jobs will be replaced by automation, many new opportunities will arise.
Except that for the people working at fast food, there are few options. For that matter, lawyers and doctors also. What will you do with the people who are no longer employed and will never be?
They come on vacation deals, wear stupid matching tee shirts and follow a flag around all day.
Add to that many gas stations owned and operated by immigrant families. I hear foreign accents every gas station here in Florida.
Out will go the fast food chop shops and the only meals to have will be fine dining...or take outs.
Dinner at the post office. Lunch at the DMV walk through and that great breakfast at the Social Security office. And if you get food poisoning drop into your local Obama Hospital/Hospice and see what the death panel prescribes.
Disney will buy some politicians to get itself exempted from the pay hike.
Prices vary but start at $124 to $174 for a day pass!!!
All going exactly as planned. Nothing except complete and utter control is the goal for these commies.
Which tells us nothing useful. The restaurant business in the Bay Area always has a lot of churn.
If you look at the (pretty good) EBT article referenced here, you'll see that a bigger problem than the minimum wage is low unemployment - 3.5%-4% - making it almost impossible to find quality workers.
It's true that increased labor cost is the killer, but it's more due to decreased supply than mandated wages.
There's no doubt that the minimum wage is a big problem in less well off parts of CA where unemployment is high, but it isn't the major factor in the Bay Area.
