Bar Under Fire for ‘Racist’ and ‘Classist’ Dress Code
Yahoo News ^ | May 31, 2017 | Elise Solé

A bar that wants to maintain a “classy atmosphere” has released a dress code, which some are calling racist.

The Bottled Blonde, a pizzeria and beer garden in Chicago, recently posted a sign on its doors outlining a lengthy dress code. Here are a few examples from the list of banned items:

“No Excessively Baggie, Sagging, Ripped, Dirty, Frayed, Overly Flashy, or Bright clothing. No hawaiian, tie dye, floral, skull prints, or anything else obnoxious. No gang attire (leather cuts, colors, or insignias) and no camouflage. No Embellishments or Statement [attire]. No plain white tees, long tees, denim, flannel … or zippers on shirts. … Tank tops before 6 PM only. … No Jordans, Nike Air Max, or Air Force Ones. … Hats must be worn forward at all times.”

On Monday, a photo of the sign — captioned “Apparently Bottled Blonde only wants GAP patrons” — was posted by user xxirish83x to Reddit, where it received more than 400 comments from people who debated whether the dress code was racist or classist.

“As others have pointed out, this dress code isn’t to keep black people out,” wrote Reddit user LeaveIttoBeaver. “It’s to keep poor people out. They want good looking customers who have money to spend on $6 PBR.” runandkickgirl added, “A simplified version of this sign: ‘Dress Code: Hooded white sheets only.’”

I suppose they instituted this dress code because vulgarity has become so widespread that they cannot count on customers to exercise good taste, so good taste has to be enforced through rules.

Speaking of the New Yorker, it’s now nine bucks ($8.99) a pop. Wonder how they stay in business. Must be snob appeal.

Naturists don’t go nude in public, we go nude at legal nude beaches (Haulover in Miami, The Ledges in Vermont, Black’s Beach in San Diego, Wreck Beach in Vancouver, BC and others) or Resorts (Club Paradise in Land Of Lakes, Florida, Solair in Woodstock, CT , Sun Ridge in Sterling, CT and many more AANR resorts).

My business, my rules. Don’t like ‘em—Go someplace else. That’s the free market.

As it should be, but it's long gone.

Jeez whiz, there are STILL restaurants that require a jacket and tie.

Chanticleer in Seattle does, and it's one of the finest restaurants in the world.

Yeah, that's great if you're some internet billionaire and want to show up in a t-shirt and jeans.

You just won't be seated by the window. (YES, that is a rule. And they enforce it)

That reminds me of when I went to Baltimore to a fine dining establishment.

Don't laugh, there ARE fine dining places in Baltimore.

They required a jacket. I didn't have one, so they took me to a dressing room where they had many fine jackets set on a rack.

The Maitre'd put one on me and said: "OK, now you're set."

Was I "offended"? Not in the least.

They set the rules and I followed them.

And it WAS one of the best meals I've ever had.

Something is to be said about "classy" and how it doesn't mean much today.

American men work and we don't waste time dressing up just to get a nut and a bolt... My dad would take a shower and dress in something a little nicer just to go to the store for the equivalent of a nut and a bolt (although more commonly it was because he'd broken something...), and he still does so now he's in his eighties. I've seen him shower four times in one day, between projects and mowing the lawn and whatnot. Of course, he also grew up in a house with no running water (they had electricity first and he was in school before that happened), and still remembers how thrilled he was when he could finally take a shower after he had done the chores and before he left for school. Showers are a luxury and not a given in his world.

Recently I received a catalog by mistake. I starter looking through it and was almost shouting because the dresses and women’s suits were just beautiful. I was almost through the catalog before I noticed it was directed to black women. I didn’t know that clothing catalogs are directed to specific customers (duh me). I picked me out a dress and ordered it. It’s at the seamstress’ now being hemmed (I’m short). That catalog was full of the type of clothing I love and can’t find. Is that discrimination? Black people getting pretty clothes while I have to shop at Goodwill to find anything that doesn’t look like a street...er vender?

2 brunettes working at the Bottled Blonde? The irony of it all...

No irony at all. A 'bottle blonde' would be a natural brunette.

Hate to say it but it does sound a little racist in the shoe department. No high top sneakers but VANS are ok?? That is stupid. Either ban sneakers or not. I have no problem with private clubs doing what they want but my opinion is that it would be legal but racist to ban what black people like to wear but not what white people like to wear, in the exact same category of clothing. Sorry.

“No brimless headgear” = No yarmulkes.

That’s it. No hot orthodox men in high top sneakers, I’m out.

Doesn’t change the fact that most of them shouldn’t be naked.

I have been trying to find out who did it first.

The first people to wear BASEBALL CAPS BACKWARDS were BASEBALL PLAYERS. Primarily it was the CATCHER and PLATE UMPIRE.

“No brimless head gear eliminates Muslim caps and Jewish yarmulkes. Sikh turbans, too.”

Maybe they will issue you a clip on brim.

If they allow hat to be worn inside then they don’t have ‘classy attire’ in my book.
