Trump tells Middle East to 'drive out' Islamist extremists

U.S. President Donald Trump called on Arab leaders to do their fair share to "drive out" terrorism from their countries on Sunday in a speech that put the burden on the region to combat militant groups.

Trump, who generated controversy with his push to ban many Muslims from entering the United States, described the fight against terrorism as a battle between good and evil rather than a clash of civilizations.

"America is prepared to stand with you in pursuit of shared interests and common security. But nations of the Middle East cannot wait for American power to crush this enemy for them," Trump told leaders of 55 Muslim majority countries representing more than a billion people.

"The nations of the Middle East will have to decide what kind of future they want for themselves, for their countries and frankly for their families and for their children," he said.

"It's a choice between two futures and its a choice America cannot make for you. A better future is only possible if your nations drive out the terrorists and drive out the extremists.

"Drive them out! Drive them out of your places of worship. Drive them out of your communities. Drive them out of your holy land and drive them out of this earth," he said.

Yeah, but Trump told them explicitly that they need to drive the extremists out of “the earth.” He’s not saying push them to new countries; he’s telling the Muslim leaders they need to get serious about killing murderous terrorists, especially since as he pointed out the vast majority of people murdered by these terrorists have been Muslims.

Please read or watch the speech. Your point 2 is a misinterpretation of what he actually said:

DRIVE THEM OUT of your places of worship.
DRIVE THEM OUT of your communities.
DRIVE THEM OUT of your holy land, and
DRIVE THEM OUT OF THIS EARTH.

This is quite different from claiming he said to “expel” terrorists to Europe. He wants them ostracized and ultimately killed. In fact, he talked about how these leaders need to make the Middle East a place where people do not want to escape from.

I’m sure he knows your point one quite well, but that doesn’t change the fact that ISIS and other extremist groups are legitimate threats to many leaders in the Muslim world. After all, ISIS has to eliminate these secular leaders to make way for the Islamic Caliphate. It’s in these leaders’ best interest to oppose these extremists if only to better keep power for themselves. Trump wants to try to convince as many people to side with us on this as possible, but I’m sure he’s not naive enough to think they will all get on board.
