Hundreds of workers were in "take cover" position after a tunnel in a plutonium finishing plant collapsed in Hanford early Tuesday morning. The tunnel was full of highly contaminated materials such as hot radioactive trains that transport fuel rods.
The “no fly zone” is so radiological sampling can take place without interference from other aircraft.
Good - you’re a night owl anyway, aren’t you?
“... and are very rare even at Hanford.”
I used to do a lot of work at Hanford - including 200 East. In 9 years working there on and off (contractor) I had one “shelter in place”. It was a test drill. A drag when you are trying to get outside work done under budget.
I sure hope this isn’t as serious as it sounds. It could be a real disaster for the on-going work out there.
"Screen size" is customarily a single dimension too, but the particles that get through are three dimensional. Similarly, filters are "micron rated."
That said, I think any radiation or chemical hazard is generally measured by mass.

Thanks for that link. she links to the above link.
Seems that this is an abandoned tunnel, and rail cars of contaminated stuff were parked inside the tunnel and left there as a form of “disposal”. The practice was stopped in the 90’s. The reports indicate that there is no evidence of airborne contamination. I would imagine that the railcars were boxcars, with contaminated stuff stored in drums as well.
They say the shelter in place is standard protocol, and was probably triggered as soon as the collapse occurred - or was noticed. It wouldn’t surprise me if the sinkhole wasn’t discovered right away.
Almost half 91 of 221 of the production company died of cancer.
Um...no...highly unlikely anyway...PART of the tunnel experienced some form of collapse of the roof as evidenced by a depression in the earth covering it. Won’t know the mechanism of the roof failure until it is examined closely by structural engineers. It appears as though the contents of the tunnel are still completely contained, and no threat to the public.
Chill...
Here's a pic of the collapsed area.
in case the pic itself isn't displaying for you.
Yep...I am.
Well damn .....
Wow, a picture is worth a thousand words; particularly words coming from today’s “journalists” who wouldn’t know clear writing if they saw it.
Thanks for posting.
Just finished watching it and I was enthralled. Amazing stuff and certainly amazing engineering. I highly recommend it for everyone’s viewing. Sure glad I happened to see the advertising for it as I never would have known. We miss so much watching the rest of the junk on TV....
A series titled "My Mother and Other Strangers" is scheduled to air on PBS in my neck of the woods on June 18th. It's a drama series set in 1943 following the Coyne family and their neighbors as they struggle to maintain a normal life after a US Army Air Force base is set up in the middle of their rural parish. I downloaded it, but haven't watched it yet, and will probably just wait until it airs on PBS.
Also, have you ever watched any of the "Endeavour" detective series? It's the prequel to the long-running Inspector Morse series. The fourth season will begin airing on PBS here on August 20th. And finally, another program titled "Dark Angel" will be airing on PBS here on May 21st. It's a true-crime drama that aired in the UK last fall. It aired as a two-parter on UK TV, but I believe it will be shown in its entirety on PBS Masterpiece. It stars Joanne Froggatt (from Downton Abbey) as protagonist Mary Ann Cotton, widely regarded as Britain's first female serial killer, who was found guilty of murder in March 1873 for the murder of three of her husbands, allegedly in order to collect on their insurance policies.
I'm not sure how much your PBS viewing schedule differs from mine here in Central NY, but you should be able to check the PBS website for your viewing area to see if any of these are forthcoming. I'm assuming that since it's PBS, they will eventually show up where you are.
(Just wait).

My husband worked there in 1986. It is run very safely up there. Sounds like no radiation released. Nobody hurt. Should all be ok. Don’t get your news from the EPA site tho.
We’re with RottenDog. Also worked at the Hanford site. We think it is very well run. Contents of the tunnel are still contained and no threat.
Chill ... that’s our vote too.
must be used China material.
