Two days before Courtney Woods dresses in a cap and gown for Harvards traditional commencement, she will don a stole made of African kente cloth and address the crowd at a somewhat different event: a graduation ceremony for black students.
Student organizers said the event, called Black Commencement 2017, is the first universitywide ceremony for black students at Harvard, and is designed to celebrate their unique struggles and achievements at an elite institution that has been grappling with its historic ties to slavery.

More than 170 students and 530 guests have signed up to attend the ceremony, which will be held May 23 at Holmes Field, near the Harvard Law School campus. The event will feature speeches by black students, alumni, and administrators.
I can only imagine how special I will feel when I walk across that stage and be able to honor my identity and my struggle at Harvard, said Woods, who is completing a masters degree at the Graduate School of Education. I know this is exactly what students like me need to be inspired as we leave this place as emerging global leaders.

Sign Up Similar ceremonies have been held for Harvard undergraduates as well as for students at Stanford, Columbia, Temple, and other campuses. On May 23, Harvard will also hold its third annual graduation ceremony for students of Latin American descent.
The ceremony for black students was created during a period of heightened activism related to racism on college campuses, and in the country at large from the Black Lives Matter movement to the increased focus on micro-aggressions, passing comments that seem to trivialize or marginalize the experiences of minorities.
At Harvard, the campus has also undergone a season of soul-searching.
Do Black students at Harvard have their own water fountains, too?
This is so hog stupid. If I were black, I would avoid it like the plague because of the negativity. (I wonder how many blacks feel pressured to attend.)
“My struggle at Harvard...”
This snowflake is going to get a huge wakeup call in the real world.
>At Harvard, the campus has also undergone a season of soul-searching.
Long lost and not recoverable. Morons, all of them.
If you segregate yourself at the end of your college career, why go there at all?
“Emerging global leaders”? With a Master’s in Education degree?
Just lends credence to the thought that their degrees are “special” ... wink, wink....
I totally get it. I would feel totally humiliated being surrounded by people who did more than wake up sometimes and protest sometimes for their degrees
Sure - heading out to teach children a Globalist's view of everything, so there will be no dissent left in a couple of decades...
Let’s take the positives from this idiocy...the families/friends who typically scream, shout and make absolute fools of themselves at graduation ceremonies will almost certainly be at this literal and figurative sideshow.
Separate but Equal. Case Closed.
Half of black college graduates work for the governmemnt. State, local, or federal.
True, Democrats have brought back segregation and racism with a fury
I know this is exactly what students like me need to be inspired as we leave this place as emerging global leaders.
Wow. Do Harvard students have an inflated sense of self, large egos, etc???????
These people sucked up a spot for better qualified students 4 years ago. Eff their racist little hearts.
Do Black students at Harvard have their own water fountains, too?
........as long as the white, Hispanic and and Asian students get all their separate but equal stuff
BEST NEWS EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(They want it-—gotta keep ‘em happy)
