An Oregon man has been fined $500 by the state government for suggesting that yellow traffic lights should last slightly longer.
The Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying hit Mats Järlström with a fine for unlawfully engaging in the practice of engineering by studying the states traffic flow systems.
He should just tell them that he identifies as an engineer. Problem solved.
He should have claimed to be an EIT
Practicing bureaucracy without a license, I presume?
This sounds very much like Oregon’s decision to fine businesses that won’t bake cakes for gay weddings.
What a joke. Make them come and get it.
ENGINEERLIVESMATTER
I have performed a study that proves the HOV lanes are complete left-wing idiocy. Often they destroy the space that could be 2 or 3 normal lanes to create one HOV.
The same is true of toll lanes, only worse . . . because no one wants to pay a toll when they could go free one lane over.
Since when are the laws of physics, mathematics and sound logical and rational thinking the sole purview of Engineers? Shouldn’t this be the basis for ANY adult conversation?
But we are talking about Liberals, and they cannot bear to deal with intelligence, logic or rational thought - so they do what comes natural all Nazi’s and silence the opposition.
Mats Järlström has a BSEE.
A Beaverton man who has a bachelor of science degree in engineering and has repeatedly challenged Oregon’s timing of yellow traffic lights as too short was investigated by a state board for “unlicensed practice of engineering’’ and fined $500.
“Now, Mats Järlström has joined with the national Institute for Justice to file a federal civil rights lawsuit against members of the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying.
He contends state law and the board’s actions that disallow anyone from using the word “engineer” if they’re not an Oregon-licensed professional engineer amount to an “unconstitutional ban on mathematical debate.’’”
Can't have some do gooder saving lives.
He didn’t “practice engineering” since he did not engineer anything.
Did the Chicago Tribune “practice engineering”?

Sue the Board.
States collect fines by taking your driver’s licence. In in Florida, once you have paid your fine you must then pony-up an additional $500 licence reinstatement fee.
Government is now theft by well dressed crooks.
Americans have telegraphed the elites that there is no outrage that they wont meekly accept. Courts can do as they damn well please.
He IS an engineer.
Perhaps not a “registered professional engineer”,
but so what.
He should counter-sue for the failure of the
stupid, pathetic, uneducated clowns on
the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering
and Land Surveying for not wearing
‘warning labels’.
They could have been paying in the millions.
“Get out of our way, boy. We’re makin’ money on this scheme.”
Good comment.
Only a ‘Registered Professional Engineer” can advertise themselves as an “ENGINEER” to do work and charge for the work done. A PE is required to have the word “Engineer” or “Engineering” in a company name.
BUT - for someone to study traffic light patterns and file a report, attempt to persuade courts that there is a problem - and indicate that they have an Engineering Degree and therefore they claim to be an ‘engineer’....well - the Oregon Board should be fined and required to pay ALL legal costs and a penalty for being such jack-wagons.
This kind of study is often done by statisticians and specialists in operations research. It is not the sole purview of “engineers.”
He also wasn’t paid for his work, so by definition no professional services were rendered.
