Running, walking, yoga and tai chi have all been shown to significantly boost brain power in the over 50s.But experts say almost any exercise leaving you breathless helps with the benefits evident irrespective of the current state of someones brain health.
Research by a team of respected Australian scientists confirm what is good for the heart is also good for the brain.
The team behind the remarkable findings said evidence was strong enough to recommend prescribing certain exercises to improve cognitive function.
Professor Joseph Northey, of the University of Canberra Research Institute for Sport and Exercise, said: The findings suggest an exercise programme with components of both aerobic and resistance-type training, of at least moderate intensity and at least 45 minutes per session, on as many days of the week as possible, is beneficial to cognitive function in adults aged over 50.
Researchers reviewed the records of 12,820 people in their 50s from 39 trials who were given supervised exercise programmes, including aerobic exercise, resistance training, multi-component exercise, containing elements of aerobic and resistance training, tai chi and yoga.
They found taking up moderate or vigorous exercise improved brain capacity, the ability to process information quickly and memory.
Aerobic exercise, like running, swimming or walking, significantly enhanced cognitive abilities while resistance training, like weights, had a pronounced effect on working memory.

As an aside, a family friend stopped by for coffee the other day. And once seated in the living with her coffee, she said, "what is that odor?"
I told the truth...I usually do.
"My tomcat sprayed me after breakfast."
Right after he sprays me, he runs up for a head but.
But...hey, that's what's loving cats is all about.
He told me he loves me...in a way that lasts all day.
It is his way of thanking me.
I am fixated on beating this. The Doctors tell me that they expect to cure me.These guys are some of the finest in the country.I had a choice of the University Hospital system in Cleveland,Cleveland Clinic,or the James in Columbus.I chose the James after doing my research.
Knee is bone on bone. I have pictures. :)
I do walk a fair amount, which is usually not too bothersome. The occasional ibuprofen and taking it easy when warranted. I’ve also found that cycling is not too bothersome so I’ve gotten back on 2 wheels quite a bit lately. I’ve been away from it for a while since I had my shoulder scoped in August, but it’s back to a reasonable level now and I’ve put on a handful of cycling miles.
It is fun actually, though I’m not nearly as nimble on 2 wheels as I was 40 years ago.
Exercise every day...and pray fervently. Give it hell.
It will all end in the right way.
I will be right behind you.
Best of luck to you, and prayers.
Sounds like they should be able to target the errant cells and concentrate treatment on that area. Never a guarantee, but they are really good at this now days.
Sounds like a very informed decision. Sometimes it’s hard to weed through all of the resources/info...but, it sounds like you’ve done an excellent job of doing just that.
I like what the docs are telling you!
Hold ‘em to it :-)
I have a rowing machine (see homepage) that keeps me in shape off the bike.
Might start swimming at the local college in the near future.
Must keep adapting.
I dont dexercise at all and Im not demented, and neither are the flying lobster people who are floating around near the ceiling....
Same here except it was the cartilage in my right big toe going out. Nothing like bone-on-bone, huh? I cannot imagine that pain in my knee!
I had a moderately successful surgery 18 months ago and can at least go for 5-10 mile hikes in the mountains around here (Santa Clara County, CA).
Yes, indeed. Keep moving forward.
Today was mowing day. 1 acre, 85% riding mower, 15% walk-behind because of the steep hill at the front of the property. It is exercise, and it's about 2 1/2 hours if I do all the trimming. At some point in the next few years, I will probably move to something that requires less outdoor work. But for now, the work is part of the exercise and I don't mind it most of the time.
There is truth to this. I run 2 miles daily, 100 push ups, 200 sit ups, a bunch of pull ups throughout the day, and it does sharpen your mind quite a bit. I’m enlisting and I’m trying to max out the APFT standards before I actually join. It impacts your mind positively quite a bit
They are mapping the tumor tomorrow morning with an MRI.That data will be used to control the machine that administers the radiation. There will be minimal damage to healthy tissue but the focused radiation will fry the cancer. The chemo will enhance the effect.
These are Doctors that take pride in their work and success rate. The surgeon who will be removing what’s left of the tumor is well respected by his peers. No one in the country could do a better job than he will.
Fasting triggers stem cell regeneration of damaged, old immune system

My allergist also told me that it doesn’t need to be an absolute fast. That calorie restriction is enough and there have been reduced calorie diets that provide the same immune system boost that fasting does.
He told me that it would be 4 days of a reduced calorie diet less than half my daily intake or about 800 calories a day, and then 10 days of eating normally every two weeks.
The reduced calorie diet is also safer than a total abstinence from food.
I’ve heard that it’s also supposed to help with side effects from chemo.

Great article. Thanks.
My wife had Stage 4 colon cancer.
They gave her a 5% chance of living.
That was 10 years ago.
I’d say consider the possibly that you’ll live.
Don’t undergo treatment that will take away from your future lifestyle.
The head butt was just him patronizing you, saying "Bless your little heart."
How, might I ask, is it that Ronald Reagan and Charlton Heston both end up with advanced Alzheimers, both men fine physical specimens who were fit as a fiddle?
Using your brain muscle a lot will, IMHO, keep Alzheimers more at bay than anything else, so reading FR and posting here will do much for your memory bank folks. Keep thinking!!!!
I read the poses are done in front of idols in India as a sort of sacrifice. I guess it would be ok to use the swastika in jewelry if you didn’t know what it represented.
