The Trump administration has dropped any support for a so-called border adjustment tax on imports, according to two people who have been briefed on the matter.
The tax was intended to be the keystone of a tax reform proposal developed by Republican leaders in the House of Representatives. But it faced immense pushback from influential companies including Walmart and Toyota.
If enacted, a border adjustment tax would have effectively imposed significant levies on billions of dollars of imported goods. Retailers in particular would have been hard hit, as products ranging from tires to T-shirts, which are imported from overseas, would have suddenly cost more. Automakers and other manufacturers that rely heavily on foreign parts and supplies would have also been hit.
The border tax may be revisited later, one of these people said, but it was shelved ahead of the Wednesday release of the White Houses new tax plan. A White House spokeswoman, Lindsay Walters, did not respond to requests for comment. President Trump had always seemed ambivalent toward the border tax.
In a late February interview with Reuters, Mr. Trump said the border tax could lead to a lot more jobs in the United States. But the proposal received a mixed reception among his top aides; whereas chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon supported it, National Economic Council director Gary Cohn opposed it.

Cohn faction strikes again.
Are Cohn and Kushner sick of winning yet?
If Trump drags the US into war, doesn't enact the Wall Tax and doesn't begin to build the Wall, then he will be reelected because the stock market is booming and we'll be in a war so voters will be reluctant to "change horses" in the middle of a war.
Trump wins either way.
May. Could. Is said to. Anonymous sources say.
All key bs indicators.
Well that's the intent. They're supposed to engage domestic suppliers instead.
The New York Times..., some FReepers most trusted source.
This one you get to find out tomorrow that it is not fake news.
They (the dooshes in the MSM) still don’t get it.
This isn’t working any more.
We stopped paying attention years ago.
For later

When was the last time Steve Bannon had any real influence? Do conservatives have a voice inside that Beltway?

First thing I noticed as well.
But look at how they, the NYT, are slowly boosting Cohn who was never selected by the President but who rather slipped in through the backdoor of the West Wing held open by that imminently sage, widely experienced, all-knowing wise philosopher and purveyor of truth, Monsieur Kushner.
It is telling how in January of this year CEO Blankfein of Goldman was slamming the President-Elect relentlessly and directly through the dinosaur media outlets and then suddenly changed his tune when his protégé Goldman President Monsieur Cohn rode the Kushner mule train into the West Wing. Suddenly, Blankfein is excited to send yet more of his kind into the Trump White House.
Funny how that works.
‘is said’......’according to two people’.......New York Times
Nuff said.....take it with a grain
Back Down, What?
Glad to have the NYT assurance of that.
I know a lot of folks haven’t noticed, but does it every hit them that the NYTs loves printing articles that are for the most part designed to cause infighting on the Right?
The NYT should be thrilled with this, but they report from an angle that is designed to do only one thing.
And folks on our side seem gleeful as can be to play along.
Yes, divide and conquer is their angle, always.
The thing for Trump supporters to remember, that besides any possible infighting or uninvited persons inside the White House, the President is in control.
I may not like Cohn, but I will never let a source like the NYT or any other source for that matter, never allow them to manipulate my support for the President. He’s already done so much to reverse the Obama damage and I am confident he will do a lot more.
Unreal. Trump is unveiling the plan tomorrow. You dont have to rely on NYT to tell you that
Either the tax is in or it is out.
Now that there is some outcry..an official has said there could be a placeholder tax . This is to appease the right who will think it will magically turn In to the border tax.
Reagan should have taught all of you a lesson. Promises by congress to do stuff later cant be trusted.
