Anita’s decade was the Fifties, especially the work she did with Billy May. In 1975, she went back into the studio and turned this standard into a smoky jazz club delight. Catch her phrasing and how she works around the bar lines.

LIZA MINNELLI: “THE MAN I LOVE”

”New York, New York” was an honorable failure. Martin Scorsese coaxed fine performances from Robert DeNiro and Liza in 1977, but the man who walked away with the movie was saxophonist George Auld, who gave a brilliant, sour performance as a jaded bandleader. Auld dubbed DeNiro’s playing, and Robert took great pains to learn how to play the sax to make it look real.

This is a clip from the movie. Liza sings the entire introduction, and when she breaks into the song itself, it’s a revelation.

LINDA RONSTADT: “THE MAN I LOVE”

”The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones,” a limited series produced for ABC in the early Nineties by George Lucas, told of the early years of Indy before, during and after World War I. Twisting history a bit, Lucas moved the song back to 1920 and George White’s Scandals. A brief segment showed the introduction in its original up-tempo arrangement during rehearsal. Then Gershwin took the singer to a blues club and showed her how he really wanted it done.

Linda Ronstadt voiced over this 1992 version, a clip from the TV show. It includes the complete intro.

In life, Etta was a physical and emotional wreck, a real badass, but in front of a microphone she could touch you by cutting to the heart of a song. This is Etta in 1994 with the simplest of accompaniments. The sax solo in the middle is a joy by itself.
