The 50-year-old Tennessee man accused of kidnapping his 15-year-old former student was arrested in Northern California and the teenage girl was recovered safely after she was missing for more than a month, authorities said Thursday.
Tad Cummins, a former high school teacher in rural Tennessee, was nabbed in California after disappearing with Elizabeth Thomas on March 13, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a post on Twitter. The TBI said Thomas was recovered safely.
The two were discovered at daybreak Thursday morning after a caller had tipped authorities the night before that the pair was living "in a cabin in a remote area" of Cecilville, California, TBI spokesman Josh DeVine said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

I believe the comment about “paid administrative leave” was a sarcastic comment on teacher’s unions and discipline.
IIRC, he was fired the day after he left. I am actually surprised they did that.
I always considered that the exception that proves the rule. I can’t think of any other of the teacher-student sex stories that have occurred where they end up in a stable happy marriage and family.
The Letourneau case reminds us that truth is very much stranger than fiction.
He’ll probably get more time for those two guns in CA than he will for any of the other crimes.
There is definitely more here than meets the eye.
The girl has been with this guy without any attempt at escaping or calling out for help for nearly SIX weeks.
She had also had dyed her hair to help hide her identity.
The media in TN is doing everything they can to portray her as the young "victim" who was under the control 'of a sinister human being.
Like I said, I think you'll find as details unfold that she was somewhat complicit and BOTH were living out some kind of exciting sexual fantasy.
If you want to get more of a sense of her persona you'll see that the media keeps using the pics of her wearing her glasses and looking young and naive.
Then there are a couple of shots of her without the glasses in which she emotes a much different essence.
The guy was a fool.. The girl, however, is NOT completely innocent.
There has been some speculation that Cummins had threatened
to hurt her family members if she did not leave with him.
(This is, of course, gossip as speculation is often times.)
He was heavily armed. - Photos often don’t tell us much of
anything. This photo of Cummins and the girl is not likely
photoshopped; however, in this day and age of photoshop,
not everything we see in photos paint an accurate picture.
Why do so many of you guys try to paint Elizabeth Thomas
as a “willing participant”?
How do YOU know that Cummins didn’t have a pistol stuck
in his baggy jeans ready to shoot her if she tried to run?
- Perhaps he had her in fear for her life.
I wonder who will get the rights to the imminent life-time movie.
In the eyes of the law, they are BOTH innocent, unless or
until PROVEN GUILTY in a court of law. - Cummins will
probably come up for trial about the time my jury pool is
called up for jury duty. - It’s past time for me to be
retired, so I hope they will roll me off the rolls!
His problems are only just beginning. He ain’t seen nuthin’
yet.
Some teenage girls can be dangerous. That may not be news to anyone who has been a step-parent. LOL
There was a high school girl in Florida who convinced her boyfriend to murder her mother. Mother had a crystal candlestick smashed on her head. The gal made sure the old boyfriend went to prison. She got off by testifying against him and moved on to a new boyfriend in another state.
The father of the new boyfriend worked for a big city newspaper. He was so impressed by the young manipulative woman he wrote an article about how great she was and how she had just been accepted to Harvard.
The article was her undoing. By chance a Florida resident saw the article and the real story came out. BTW Harvard rescinded its acceptance.
I hope you’re right. Reports say he’s now in Federal custody.
Ah. Probably because I searched for “Thomas” and then “Cummins” as stated in the headline at NBC.
Under Tennessee law unless they can prove relations occurred or she was taken against her will he walk on the kidnapping charge. Any teen 13 and older can at anytime drive or walk away with a total stranger. I am glad they caught this scumbag but I hope he doesn’t walk on a technicality of the law.
There are cases of young women who manipulate others and then play the victim.
**************************************************
How young does this manipulate young women have to be before it becomes the 50 year old mans fault? 14?, 13?, 12?, 11?
While I do disapprove of this, I wonder why in this age of acceptance of just about any libertine lifestyle this is meeting with such opprobrium. I also wonder how this story would be treated if this were a same sex couple.
And I searched for ‘teacher’
I’ve seen some cases of very young girls causing major problems, including death of humans and death of marriages.
I really can't stomach the replies on this thread. Thanks for taking it on.
Probably because this type of thing is the last acceptable form of...well...discrimination. An older male taking advantage of a young girl. The negative emotions run high and the vitriol is almost universal when these stories appear. But I get your point. It does seem odd.
