The time-frame was 2011 the Tea Party had just crushed a republican Utah senator named Bob Bennett a year earlier. Massive push-back against growth of government including TARP, Auto Bailouts and now ObamaCare was fueling the grassroots movement; the Professional Republican Party hierarchy, the GOPe, was furious; the Tea Party represented a risk to the establishment republican authority.
GOPe corrupt Senate leadership (McConnell, Portman, Cornyn, Corker, Blunt, Burr, Crapo et al) were assembling all resources to kill the Tea Party uprising. They reached out to like-minded colleague John Boehner, Speaker of the House for support. Hatch must be protected from the challenge.
Speaker Boehner, Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy (influence agents) told Jason Chaffetz to back away from the primary challenge and he would be rewarded with a bigger office, cushy career advancement, and the Chairmanship of an important and powerful committee.
The GOPe warned Chaffetz it would be in his long-term best interests to turn away from the Tea Party because the GOPe were going to go nuclear against the rebellion. There was also a 2012 Presidential race on the horizon and all efforts would be expended to destroy the opposition to their previously selected candidate, Mitt Romney.

Ping...
Chaffetz is an honorable man and after going through the hearings on Benghazi, Hillary email, and IRS thuggery only to watch the minority party throw out the rule of law he’s probably had enough.
Good riddance. Did anything good come out of all those Congressional hearings he chaired? Nada. No one ever got prosecuted. Adios Jason, why not leave now and enjoy an early retirement???
Not having to worry about re election may be a very liberating thing for the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee
How does the chairman get Congress to prosecute somebody when Congress doesn’t want to?
You’d have to be a dictator to move the unmovable.
Conservative Review Liberty Score of “C.”
Weak.
Ditto.
Yep
Chaffetz is an honorable man...I don't call any (R) that is anti-Trump "honorable" and Chaffetz is anti-Trump
As far as I'm concerned...Good riddance.
Drives the point home doesn’t it.
Glad someone isn’t afraid to do that.
Chaffetz has been the chairman of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform since 2015 after being elected in 2009.
Chaffetz sold his Tea Party soul to become Chairman.
There was a story, perhaps apocryphal, in early 1963, long before he was assassinated, that then President Kennedy called Barry Goldwater into the Oval Office, and said, “Barry, you want this G*d-damned job? Take it!”
Being the bearer of a lonely and thankless task which seems to have no chance of resolution can wear away anybody’s enthusiasm. Some more quickly than others.
As of February 14, 2012 Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) is the second most conservative Member of the House or Representatives. Currently holding a score of 97%.
As of 2017 Heritage Action gives Chaffetz a score of 74%.
Once Chaffetz was bought off by the GOP Establishment he forgot his Tea Party supporters.
To be fair no one was ever going to be prosecuted by Obama's Attorney General. However now that Sessions is there I still expect no one will be prosecuted.
A total did, on the wrong side of history by opposing Trump. Good riddance.
One by one the tea party fallout continues.
Ditto to what you said. I find Chaffetz spineless.
All hat, no cattle.
So it’s OK with the “insurgency” if Trump makes a deal/seeks the continuation of a real RINO GOPe Senator, and he’s somehow pure while Jason Chaffetz isn’t. What hypocrisy, as the GOPe is now using the insurgency, with Trump making the deals/cover for the GOPe.
I suspect something else is afoot. He seems a little fruity to me. It could be that the real reason and it might come out later, that he comes out of the Congressional cloak room in a dress.
