In Syria, heed the lessons of Libya and Iraq: Forgo regime change, seek congressional authorization
Washington Examiner ^ | April 8 2017 | Editors, Washington Examiner

Autoplay: On | Off President Trump prayed for "God's wisdom" on Thursday night while announcing the U.S. bombing of a Syrian airfield. We're not in the position to provide that, but here's man's wisdom, which should be crystal clear to anyone who has lived through the past two decades:

A war to take out Syrian President Bashar Assad would be a disastrous folly that would endanger American security, aid the Islamic State and al Qaeda, and may not make the innocents in Syria any safer.

Trump needs to reject the voices in Congress and the media calling for regime change, and find a way to limit his military strikes as narrowly as possible to his stated goal of deterring Assad's chemical attacks. And if Trump wants to keep the threat of future strikes in his quiver, he should immediately seek a congressional authorization.

Assad is an evil and murderous dictator. That doesn't mean the world will be better off if we kill him or depose him by force. Recall that Saddam Hussein and Moammar Gadhafi were evil and murderous dictators.

George W. Bush's regime change in Iraq was a mistake. It destabilized the region, empowered and emboldened Iran, aided al Qaeda, and created an environment where the Islamic State could flourish and grow.

Why are you laughing?

Do you want to see Trump make the same mistakes that Bush 43 and Obama did? What will that prove?

It’s too late. The neocons have won. I can’t care more than Trump.

"We know who would rush in to fill the void if we eliminated the Assad regime, because they are already perched right there on the doorstep of Damascus: the Islamic State and al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra."

That's the objective! Duh.

Trump just made the US's covert war, overt - something not even Odinga, Hitlery, and Lurch pulled off. As evidenced by recent fact, DJT is a liar regarding the Middle East. He can never be trusted again.

Another fact, the world's largest and most powerful Christian just brought open war to a Muslim Damascus, setting the stage for the ultimate goal, the nation next door.

Got prophecy?

It isn't a coincidence this happened just before Pesach (or 9/11 happened just before Rosh Hashanah).

Didn’t Bush get Congress’s approval for Iraq? I think so. Article is a waste of time.

Hopefully, Trump will not be as STUPID as some of our recent American “leaders”. But who the hell knows.

I’m hoping that Trump was simply using the chemical incident (whether by Assad’s forces, by the Islamist “rebels”, or by an accident) as a convenient provocation/pretext for his attack on Assad’s airfield at an opportune time to show his administration’s toughness.

Hopefully, this American bombing of Assad was, and will remain, a one-off event.

No. Iran slowed it nuclear program. Libya handed its WMD program over. There was no refugee crises like the one under Obama. I wonder why that is. Iraq was not easy, but nothing compared to WW2. We civilians were not attacked during WW2. We civilians were attacked on 9/11. Saddam was a big backer of terrorism. He liked playing with WMD. Remember the 500 tons of yellow cake that was shipped to Canada?

Obama destabilized almost every country in the ME. The ridiculous pull out of Iraq. The promotion of Arab Spring in Libya, Egypt and Syria. Yemen is a total failure. Finally, Obama negotiated a travesty of a deal with Iran giving Iran $150 Billion to do with as it pleases. Assad is Iran's front man and an ally of Russia.

Our take-out of Saddam was the biggest favor we could have done for Iran. He was their No. 1 enemy. When he was deposed, he was replaced by Shiites who had been living as exiled in Iran. When they took power in Iraq, that country suddenly became Iran’s closest ally. And all of this happened years before Obama came in — it was totally under George Bush. Moreover, the new Iraq constitution said that shiite law was the highest law of the land. All of this “progress” was purchased at the cost of $2 trillion in American tax dollars, and thousands of American lives.

And one other side effect: 500,000 Iraqi Christians killed or driven from their homes, by the crazy jihadists who were let loose when we killed Saddam, who had kept them under his heel.

Yes, the Iraq invasion was the biggest strategic blunder in American history.

The ridiculous pull out of Iraq.

You’re talking out of both sides of your face. You say Bush liberated Iraq. But you also say that we couldn’t pull our troops out. Why was that? Because Bush’s invasion created chaos - so we needed to stay there indefinitely to try to keep the lid on.

The same reasons that we are still in Europe, Japan and South Korea. The same reason we had The Marshall Plan.

The same reasons that we are still in Europe, Japan and South Korea.

That statement laughably false and illogical. We’re in those three places to deter neighboring countries — not to keep order in Europe, Japan and South Korea. The reason we were still needed in Iraq was to keep order IN IRAQ - because our invasion created chaos there.

Yes, it was a blunder because our invasion had destroyed their country and allowed jihadis to run wild. We were needed to control the forces of chaos that we unleashed - such as the mass killing of Christians. You’re admitting all this by saying we could not leave, the society had become too violent, wracked by civil war

And calling me Obamabot doesn’t make you sound any less ignorant. I’m saying the same thing about Bushs Iraq stupidity as Trump says. Is he also an Obamabot?
