A Shepherd for Life
April 8, 2017
God . . . has been my shepherd all my life to this day.
Genesis 48:15
When my son changed grades in school he cried, I want my teacher for life! We had to help him realize that changing teachers is a part of life. We may wonder: Is there any relationship that can last a lifetime?
Jacob, the patriarch, found out there is one. After living through many dramatic changes and losing loved ones along the way, he realized there had been a constant presence in his life. He prayed, May the God . . . who has been my shepherd all my life to this day . . . bless these boys (Gen. 48:1516).
Jacob had been a shepherd, so he compared his relationship to God as that of a shepherd and his sheep. From the time a sheep is born through its growth to old age the shepherd cares for it day and night. He guides it during the day and protects it during the night. David, also a shepherd, had the same conviction, but he highlighted the eternal dimension to it when he said, I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever (Ps. 23:6).
Changing teachers is a part of life. But how good it is to know that we can have a relationship for life. The Shepherd has promised to be with us every day of our earthly existence (Matt. 28:20). And when life here ends, we will be closer to Him than ever.
Father, I thank You for being the Shepherd of my life. I praise Your faithfulness.
Jacob was the first person in the Bible to affectionately call Yahweh my shepherd (Gen. 48:15). The psalmists as well as the prophets celebrate God as a shepherd who leads, cares for, and protects His people. Hundreds of years later, Jesus said that He is the Good Shepherd who knows and loves us (John 10:1114). And the apostle John envisioned the Lamb of God as the shepherd leading the sheep to springs of living water (Rev. 7:17).
Are you weary from lifes struggles? Refresh yourself with knowing that Jesus is your Good Shepherd who leads, loves, and cares for you.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
GEORGE GERSHWIN: 3 PRELUDESChopin had written a collection of 24 preludes, short piano pieces, with one in each key. George felt he was ready to do the same. But once he sat down with music paper, the number was reduced to seven in manuscript, five in public performance, and then finally three on publication in 1926. So much for big plans.
Prelude in B-flat, allegro ben ritmato e deciso
It begins with a five-note blues motif; virtually all the melodic material is based on this theme. Syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baião and chords containing flattened sevenths occur throughout; these give the piece a strong jazz feel. The piece is in ternary format (A-B-A). There are snippets of various virtuoso techniques such as repeated notes, octaves, scales and crossovers, each of which is used for only a moment before moving on to a new idea.
Prelude in C# minor, andante con moto e poco rubato
Also in ternary format, it begins with a subdued melody winding its way above a smooth, steady bass line. The harmonies are built on thirds, emphasizing both the seventh and the major/minor duality of the blues scale. In the second section, the key, tempo and thematic material all change; only the similarity of style binds the two sections together. The opening melody and bass return in the final section, more succinct but otherwise unchanged, and the piece ends with a slow ascent on the keyboard. Gershwin called it a sort of blues lullaby.
Prelude in E-flat minor, agitato
After a brief and dramatic introduction, the main theme is revealed: two melodies that together form a question-and-answer. This theme is used throughout to provide harmonic structure. The question is harmonized using E-flat minor chords, the answer by E-flat Major chords. After a brief, highly syncopated middle section, the melodic pair returns assertively in octaves, causing a battle between Major and minor. Major wins, and the piece concludes with a flourish.
This is Gershwin at the keyboard, recorded in 1926.
Follow the bouncing notes.

Plenty of uncharted “C’s” for me...yet, as soon as it started playing, it sounded familiar.

We’ve had pianists do this in recital at the pre-concerts for the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. It’s well known.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
OH, KAY!
GEORGE GERSHWIN: MAYBEYou have to start with George himself. He recorded this in 1926 at the piano, and you can hear what an amazing technique he had.

Did you read the comments? Some guy was very critical of the execution, and another informed him that the pianist was Gershwin.
The comments can be such a howl sometimes on You tube!
It often descends into a duel of Mr. Self-Righteous vs. Mr. Know-It-All! LOL!
