Syria decries 'aggression' as US launches cruise missiles

BEIRUT (AP) — The United States fired cruise missiles into central Syria early Friday morning, striking an Assad government-controlled air base where U.S. officials say the Syrian military launched a deadly chemical attack that killed dozens of civilians earlier this week. Syrian state TV called the attack an "aggression" that lead to "losses."

About 60 U.S. Tomahawk missiles hit the Shayrat air base, southeast of Homs, a small installation with two runways, where aircraft often take off to bomb targets in northern and central Syria. The U.S. missiles hit at 3:45 a.m. Friday morning and targeted the base's airstrips, hangars, control tower and ammunition areas, U.S. officials said.

Thanks. Read your earlier post.

Makes perfectly good sense now. These folks make no sense at all.

I don’t trust any of the parties involved — including the US government. Our intelligence community has lost me.

No but I’m not second guessing the actions. Fake news are getting the best of you.

Those who don’t get behind Trump had better stay quiet. Those who don’t do either should be subject to arrest for sedition.

Get treatment, tard.

VICTIMS of the CHEMICAL Attacks agaisnt htem, by their OWN GOVERNMENT decry Syria’s use of chemical weapons

But alas- those people’s voices don’t count- only the voices of hte pukes in syrian government who issued the chemical attacks count, and they don’t like being held accountable for their actions, so they ‘denounce’ US attacks?

Go pound sand Syria gov!

LOL - Iraq DID have WMDs and many reports point to many of those WMDs being moved to Syria just before we invaded (other caches were buried IN Iraq itself). After 14 years and the dumped Iraqi documents published here on FR back in the day this should be common knowledge. Heck, even the Obama admin admitted that Syria had in their possession some of those same WMDs a couple (few) years ago.

The Benghazi video story wasn’t promoted or even spoken of to anyone from US intel agencies, it was a BS cover story completely invented by Obama and company...

Just saying... those two specific situations don’t really prove the point you are trying to make right now.

Neither do you with your tired old "Iraq did have WMDs you guys!" crapola that even most Iraq War boosters gave up pushing in 2009.

Big difference. HRC, Jeb! and others wanted to impose a no-fly zone in Syria. I.e. Shoot down Russian Planes.

So far we are avoiding Russians...

We had better keep it that way. Won’t do much good enforcing our border if we start slugging it out with Russia.

“Trump’s first military action is cheered & applauded by Syria’s Islamists.”

Far from his first.

Trump has been pounding islamists since inauguration day. Remember the raid into Yemen where we lost a SEAL? The massive uptick in missile, drone and air attacks there? The increase in US troops and equipment sent into Syria to support the assault on the ISIS capital of Raqqa?

For what gain would Assad be behind the civilian gassing? I might believe it if he hit the entire town like Hafaz Assad did in Hama. This small attack did absolutely nothing to further Assads position. Instead it imperils his regime. Who would be behind that if that was the goal? Didn't something similar happen in the last gas attack in 2013? I thought it was found that shell couldn't have been fired from known government positions because it didn't have the range?

Not sure but I don't trust the story. Looks more like a black flag event from the little I know.

I wasn't trying to prove any point - except to say that if you want to trash our military intel you'll have to provide better examples.

BTW, choose to believe what you will about the WMDs - it's clear you have already done so, and did a long time ago, and rehashing anything here wouldn't be productive. It's just that using WMDs and Benghazi to try to say we have ineffective intelligence reports on this specific occasion doesn't back up the point you are trying to make very convincingly, IMHO.

Of course, the Iraq WMD stuff does kind of have bearing on this situation... you know considering there were convoys of it moved to Syria back in early 2003. Chances are that stockpile is gone by now though... used by Assad against his own people for a LONG time now.

Aw, poor Bashar, maybe the pansy russians can wipe his eyes, these creeps are pretty good at fighting little girls but not ISIS. Maybe the David Pukes are all mad at Trump as well.

My theory is that this is pressure for an end game in Syria without Assad.

He has grown more confident in the past year, as things have been going his way. But the Assad family is the linchpin of the Ba’ath Party in Syria. He needs more pressure to agree to go.

If you want to end up with de-Ba’athification in Syria, Assad must go - even if it is only a few hundred miles to a palatial retirement dacha on the Black Sea coast.

The insanity of all this done for the sake of Saudi Arabia.

Our nation is so messed up with our patriotism and love of our country and our military hijacked to serve the interests of a foreign power, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The nation from where 15 of the 19 9/11 terrorists came from.

Assad is being removed from power to be replaced by al Qaeda jihadists, “Osama Bin Laden admirers” as described by Peter Hitchens when discussing the fighting in Aleppo several months back.

Assad doesn’t have control? That complicates things but leads credence to Trump’s actions.

There are tons of examples of US intel being completely wrong and/or incompetent. If you’re going to protest that point you’re in denial.

Moreover, we have direct and very recent evidence that the intel agencies will also make things up out of thin air as it suits their purposes.

So the question of whether our own intel agencies are telling the truth is really something that needs to be front and center in the consideration of the reported intel.
