Rep. Devin Nunes said Thursday he is stepping aside as chairman of the House intelligence committee because he is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly disclosing intelligence without proper authorization.
"The charges are entirely false and politically motivated, and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of U.S. citizens and other abuses of power," Nunes said in a statement, adding that the allegations against him are "baseless."
Nunes said in a hastily-arranged press conference last month he had come into possession of classified information showing Trump transition team members were "incidentally collected" by U.S. intelligence agencies during their surveillance of foreign targets and improperly "unmasked." Nunes made his claim following a late-night trip to the White House where he reportedly met with senior administration officials who played a role in giving him classified information. (Nunes maintains they were not his original source.)
Rep. Mike Conaway, a Republican, will take Nunes's position as chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence as the Ethics Committee begins its probe.
The Ethics Committee is truly bipartisan, with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. The 18a investigation, as its known, has subpoena power and may also look into what Nunes told Speaker Paul Ryan and President Donald Trump when he briefed them following his March 22 press conference.
Ryan said Nunes staying on would be a "distraction" for the investigation into Russia's interference in the election and possible collusion with Trump's team. Ryan earlier expressed support for Nunes.
"He continues to have that trust, and I know he is eager to demonstrate to the Ethics Committee that he has followed all proper guidelines and laws," Ryan said in a statement. "In the meantime, it is clear that this process would be a distraction for the House Intelligence Committees investigation into Russian interference in our election. Chairman Nunes has offered to step aside as the lead Republican on this probe, and I fully support this decision."
Nunes had not briefed Rep. Adam Schiff, his Democratic counterpart on the committee, before running to Ryan and Trump. That decision blew up an already strained committee, leading to recriminations from Democrats that Nunes was acting like a presidential pawn. The committee's downward spiral led to suspended hearings on the Russia probe, putting the onus on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
This just reeks of Deep State flexing their muscles.....
I disagree, the GOPe are masters of conservative charade while stealthily supporting the progressive deep state agenda. Trump and his close circle of advisors may be unstoppable in the world of real estate development, but are being overwhelmed by the weight and power of the swamp.

“I’m this close to jumping off the Trump Train”
There’s no place to jump to...Electing Trump was the last way to handle this peacefully.
The odds that one man could defeat the propaganda media, the courts, the corrupt state, dems and repukes without being blackmailed or taken out, were slim to none.
Trump has done an extraordinary job
Apology for the double post, the dreaded mobile device double tap.

thanks!
Maybe.
But it may just be a way of shutting the Dems up...................
In America the Swamp drains you.
Have you considered that he’s “compromised”? The ubiquitous spying by Obama and co. just needed to let Nunes know what they know and he resigns. It’s possible that Nunes, et.al., didn’t think “that could happen to me” until yesterday.
Finally I see why Obama can take off for a month of cash deliveries and fun while his twin ValJar runs the games from the secured compound in alt-America.
I’ll be thrilled if he is able to do the things he wants to do.
You asked me to tell you how he would be removed. There are all kinds of lies they can create. But you didn’t comment about the possibility of him being made powerless. That’s easily done by Dems and their friends in the media and rino party.
This is one deep swamp. And there’s an old saying: When you’re up to your ass in alligators it’s hard to remember your initial objective was to drain the swamp.
I trust Trump. He defeated the swamp & all it’s advocates to win the Presidency. He didn’t suddenly lose his ability to out smart the swamp.
I believe Ryan and McCain and Hillary and the media all believe he will be gone soon.
I do not know if the allegations against O’Rielly are true. But I do know that silencing the opposition with sex assault accusations is an old political tactic. Now we hear they’ve be spying on Hannity. So you KNOW they’re spying on Rush. All they have to do is put “stuff” on their computers and they will all go away.
Up until now they’ve been a burr in the machine’s saddle. Now the machine is in a panic. No one us safe.
Obama has always been a puppet. Now he’s a retired puppet.

The left is using the ethics enforcement system of Congress to protect Susan Rice. It was never meant for that.
This is being used to shut Nunes up. But the thing is this, Republicans control the Ethics Cpmmittee. If Republicans remain unified, Nunes will be back in a short while.
BUT the Dems may regret what happens next of Trey Gowdy takes over the Chair.
I think we are in a fight to the death with the left. They want to destroy the opposition (us).
