Two teenage girls wearing leggings were barred from boarding a United Airlines flight on Sunday because they did not meet a dress code for special pass travelers, a company spokesman said amid a furor on social media.
The two girls, who were traveling with a companion, would not have been turned away for wearing leggings had they been paying customers, United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said as the airline responded to the backlash.
"(The two girls) were instructed that they couldn't board until they corrected their outfit. They were fine with it and completely understood," Guerin said, adding that all three passengers missed the flight. He did not know if they had boarded a later plane or made alternate travel arrangements.
Though the three passengers did not complain about their treatment, another traveler, Shannon Watts, who overheard the discussion touched off a firestorm on social media with a series of tweets describing a policy she suggested was unfairly targeting women and girls.

“Leggings”?
No worse fashion requirement has been foisted upon our culture than the current trend called “yoga-pants”.
Even in black, it leaves almost nothing to the imagination...can you say “camel-toe”?
My wife used to work for one of the airlines. We flew “special pass” all the time. we knew the rules. And yes, you can’t dress like a slob if you are not a paying customer.
It’s funny how people that want to create a government that controls every aspect of our lives get snotty when they are accused of violating simple rules.
Stupid people! Don’t they know we now live in a lawless society where NO ONE can follow company guidelines either. If United has a dress policy they cannot enforce it if it violates our borderless lawless societal norms! /s
They were flying on employee passes. There are strict rules for attire when you fly non-rev.
If common sense prevailed no woman would wear leggings.
The most unattractive piece of attire ever invented.
The media is deliberately and intentionally trying to make this a controversy. My morning “News” told us about it!
The media will willingly lie in order to get people riled and hurling accusations at each other.
The headline is a lie. The implication is a lie.
"Shannon Watts, founder of the anti-gun violence organization Moms Demand Action..."
In other words, a professional PITA. This story can immediately be discounted as fake news. :)
A non-story. These girls were flying gratis on an United pass, and were subject to more rigorous dress requirements than paying passengers. You fly for free, don’t complain about some dress code.
Sorry, many’s the time I’ve been walking behind a woman in yoga-pants thinking “This is a fad I can get behind”.
Especially 70 yo trying to look like 17.
I like leggings and wear them all winter, but the top MUST be long enough to cover everything and then need to be worn with a boot with a little heel. A good look if done right, not so much if done wrong.
Good idea...
Hey, if they want to wear a ‘rape-me’ sign....
I have traveled on passes before, because a family member worked for the airline. There are rules about your clothing and behavior, and you either follow them or you don’t fly. If you don’t want to follow the rules (and they are very simple), then buy yourself a full-priced ticket.
Uh, yeah. Guess she has more things to fight for instead of ‘just’ guncontrol. Just as soon as I saw the name, I did a quick look and sure enough, same shannon t watts that is such a pain in our butts. Despite the passengers appearing to not have and issue and understood the request, this slug had to make an issue of it anyway. FIDIOT! If you want to see her tweets:
