Exactly two weeks ago, this author predicted the defeat of the American Health Care Act and explained that it was a step towards the final, actual deal that will repeal and replace Obamacare.
President Donald Trump faces three irreconcilable factions: the GOP establishment, conservatives, and Democrats. He must bring them together to deliver the goods, a key rule in The Art of the Deal. But first he must show them the downside and convince them they will fail on their own.
The most difficult faction to deal with is the Republican establishment not because they are politically strong, but because on policy issues like health care, they are convinced that they have all the answers and that Trump just does not understand.
So he let them make the first move and he exposed two things about them: first, that they had not come up with a plan that was ready for prime time; second, that they had not done any of the political legwork necessary to sell their plan to voters.
Trump gave Speaker Paul Ryan and the House Republican leadership enough rope to hang themselves. Instead of dictating terms to him, they will now depend on him to save them, politically. They must accept whatever plan he will put forward.
But Trump will not make the next move. He will let the conservatives move first. They are the big winners in the first round much more so than the Democrats, who are enjoying the spectacle of Republican dysfunction but have no role to play yet.

I was following Joel up to the point where he took a flying leap off the platform of reality and stated, “Trump will turn to the moderate Democrats and offer them a deal.”
A “moderate Democrat” is an oxymoron.
I was somewhat disconcerted by the President’s seemingly enthusiastic support of the bill - but I have little doubt Trump is playing the long game.
Trump clearly stated he believes the govt has a role in healthcare. . And we must work something out on the dreamers. So amnesty, next? I can hardly wait.
You’re nitpicking words.
The fact is, Obamacare is unsustainable and Trump knows it will fail, eventually. Failure means massively higher premiums, plans being cancelled or not renewed, providers exiting the market, etc. These things will cause significant pain - on top of what has already been endured, and more and more people will reach the breaking point. Remember that now the penalties will hit the max, and all the other punitive aspects of Obamacare will continue on as-is. It is going to hurt, and the members of Congress are eventually going to feel it too.
In short, Obamacare hasn’t hit rock bottom yet. But it will and when it does, even Democrats are going to be pleading with Trump to work with them on a replacement that will address the issues and allow them to keep their seats.
There are 30 members of the Freedom Caucus, all it will take is 30 Democrats to pass a new healthcare bill. They wouldn’t do it today because the pain they feel from Obamacare is much less than the pain they would feel from voting to support Trump. He is betting that will change, and when it does, it may well be Democrat votes that put the replacement bill over the top, regardless of how much of a fit the Freedom Caucus throws.
You can sugar coat this all you want. The truth is Trump’s job just got a whole lot tougher. And it was already untenable before. The rebubs talk a good game, but in the end they want the same thing the dems want. We, as well as Trump have been played. This weakens Trump and the deep state will swoop in and pray on this weakness. Why do you think there was no bombshell out today on the wire tapping. It’s because it was pulled at the same time the health care bill was. I don’t want to underestimate Trump, but I don’t see how he can recover from this.
There’s a good reason for his enthusiastic support. The first rule of negotiating is that you never EVER put forth an offer that you are not 1000% committed to. Otherwise the other side will know it and simply ignore you. It’s a lot like being a great poker player.
So the hyped-up vote did not happen. Big deal.
Can they not regroup and work out a better bill ?
Isn’t that what Congress is supposed to do ?
Trump will propose single payer within the month, and the Dems will accept the wall and deportation.
Time Is On My Side Lyrics
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Now you all were saying that you want to be free
But you’ll come runnin’ back (I said you would baby),
You’ll come runnin’ back (like I told you so many times before),
You’ll come runnin’ back to me.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
You’re searching for good times but just wait and see,
You’ll come runnin’ back (I said you would darling),
You’ll come runnin back (Spent the rest of life with ya baby),
You’ll come runnin’ back to me.
Go ahead baby, go ahead, go ahead and light up the town!
And baby, do anything your heart desires
Remember, I’ll always be around.
And I know, I know like I told you so many times before
You’re gonna come back,
Yeah you’re going to come back baby
Knockin’, knockin’ right on my door.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
Time is on my side, yes it is.
‘Cause I got the real love, the kind that you need.
You’ll come runnin’ back (I knew you would one day),
You’ll come runnin’ back (Baby I told you before),
You’ll come runnin’ back to me.
Careful. You might miss the point. Trump plays the long version.
“dont want to underestimate Trump, but I dont see how he can recover from this.”
Ryan needs to go. It’s the only way forward now.
What’s the alternative? Do tax reform and Ryan fails to deliver again?
The failure to repeal obamacare won’t hurt Trump. But I don’t see how he can continue working with Ryan. If Ryan stays, the GOP will get nothing done and will lose the house next year.
This may be the last time, I don’t know...
I wasn’t. Even though the bill was terrible, it was simply the beginning of a long process in which it would undergo numerous changes.
I think starting that process would have been better than not starting the process as happened today.
However, I agree that there is also value to be found in what happened today.
At least now the arrogant as **** Speaker knows that he is not going to dictate the bill to everyone else.
And at most, maybe we get rid of him, because he is part of the problem.
I am not upset with today’s events, because if at first you don’t succeed... as they say.
I think you’ve probably been reading too many posts on this forum by leftist saboteurs pretending to be disgruntled conservatives. Leftist with nothing have only deception.
Probably expand Medicaid, repeal the rest of Obamacare, and deal with anything else as it comes along.
Trump advocated for it seemingly as a courtesy to Ryan. He never seemed to put his heart behind it.
I don’t understand why the Congress thinks it is the job of the American Gov’t to get into the Health Care Industry, providing people with sexual reorientation procedures, free viagara, breast implants, caring for HIV cases where people COMPLETELY were irresponsible with their sexual choices and activity.
Let the choice and consequence operate in health, if people want to smoke and drink themselves into a stupor, they would die early, we don’t need to spend tons of money to cure people who won’t exercise, eat properly, and worry, living embittered lives that promote all kinds of depression states and makes the USA the major consumer of pills to make them happy.
Let churches insure their own in the flock, cheaper rates for people who don’t eat themselves into the size of a hippo. Let insurance companies reward people who go for regular check ups, and exercise, and reward people to stay well.
Oh, I forget, we live in an upset down world where we now have Bill Clinton giving 200,000 speeches on why we should all practice fidelity,.... and Susan Rice telling us that governments need to start telling the truth. I forgot..Ooops.. never mind..
I would agree the Democrats are probably the biggest loser.
The next bill will be more conservative than this Obamacare 2.0
