Trump threatens Republicans who vote against Obamacare lite

President Trump, who promised to totally repeal Obamacare, is threatening Republicans with political retribution if they do not support the House bill which would leave the worst elements of Obamacare intact.

The House bill does a few good things -- it eliminates the individual mandate to buy insurance, and relieves employers of the costly burden of providing insurance for their workers. But, mostly, the worst parts of Obamacare stay in effect.

****SNIP****

And President Trump is threatening any Republican who votes against it.

President Trump on Tuesday turned up the pressure on recalcitrant Republicans to support a sweeping bill to overhaul the health care system, threatening wavering lawmakers in his party with political payback if they failed to get behind a measure that has become an early test of his negotiating power.

“I’m going to come after you,” Mr. Trump told Representative Mark Meadows, Republican of North Carolina, a prime holdout and the chairman of the conservative Freedom Caucus.

Trump is threatening primary challenges to those who do not pass this "Son of Obamacare" monstrosity.

I think the President has targeted the wrong side on this bill. I hope this is just a negotiating tactic, but as it stands I really hate this bill and the fact that the RINO’s are dumping this piece of crap on us.

Mr Trump is aiming his guns in the wrong direction. He has plenty of really nasty, vicious enemies (NYT, WaPo etc) that he needs to take out instead of wasting his ammo on Conservatives who want to kill Obama care.

there is a slight positive to this..it shows he is willing to take on Congress..but he is on the wrong side of this.

I have to wonder if Josh Kushners BILLION dollar company that depends on Obamacare has any bearing on Obamacarelite.

A poster said this gives illegals healthcare. SAY WHAT?????

Also gets rid of Christian Healthcare Ministries. WHY?

Please Mr. President, do not settle for anything less than 100% repeal of Obamacare. Root and branch. Every single word.

Yeah, I think I going to go on something more official than stuff supposedly said in a closed door meeting.

I am still willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt on this mess they are trying to sell as repeal. As for most of the House and Senate, phase two and three will just be more excuses. I don’t think Trump is pushing this for re-election, so he must have a plan. At least I hope he does.

We need to let Trump be Trump.

He wants a win by passage in the House, no matter what it looks like.

He will have the Senate write the thing correctly. He is relying a great deal on Rand Paul’s help there.

Threats to like this don’t do anything to engender constructive working relationships. They only draw battle lines.

I support Trump but don’t agree with this kind of tactic. You catch more flies with honey instead of vinegar.

I think people are reading too much into his statement. All he is pointing out is that people are sick of congress dropping the ball on healthcare and will not vote for them anymore. He is talking about OUR retribution, not his.

I just don't see Trump saying this.

President Trump didn’t threaten anyone. Just reminded them that they ran on a platform to repeal and replace Obamacare.

I’m very quickly losing faith in our new POTUS..and I was a YUGE supporter all the way through the campaign.

It’s sheer idiocy to force a WORSE bill on us than the nightmare we already have, just to say you have a “win”. (eg: it will apparently INCREASE costs [the biggest issue with Obambicare] for people over 50 that have to buy their own insurance vs being covered by a plan through their work - probably dramatically).

If this is the way Trump is going to govern, he’s going to lose my and millions of other people’s support VERY quickly and be a one-term President.

I sure hope he has a super-secret grand strategy up his sleeve, because what is being proposed at this point is TOTAL CRAP. I’m really shocked he’d actually get behind it.

Ryan’s “help” got us into this mess. Ryan had two years to figure out how to replace Obamacare and coordinate an action plan that will succeed. But when the time came to do something, he fumbled around and put this monstrosity together.

Ryan is out to help Ryan, not anyone else.

Trump must pull out all stops to get this passed. If, after all that, it still doesn’t pass, it can’t be blamed on any opposition from him.

It can only mean that the gop-e leadership is out of touch, and THEY must reconsider and go a different direction, not everyone else.

I don’t see that so much as a Trump strategy as much as it would be a reality check which Trump was willing to undergo.

I wish he didn’t want this so bad, but he might be thinking if he gets rid of the mandate it will give us the individual choice of buying it or not. I guess that’s a start... I know he wants to make it so we can buy insurance across state lines (which I don’t think is in the bill) and there’s no way he’s going to want illegals to buy into it.

Paul Ryan is a problem. He is the Speaker of the House. He hates Trump.

Senator Dr. Rand Paul is the Senator from Kentucky who is very knowledgeable about health care.

Two very different guys we are discussing, though I can understand your confusion.
