As President Donald Trump touts job creation for Americans as a top priority, his son's Virginia winery is seeking permission to hire foreign workers to cultivate its grapes.

Around here word of mouth would be enough. 29 jobs paying $20/hr and word would spread quickly.
The concept that somebody has to be trained how to pick fruit is funny. LOL. It might be tiring work but it is totally brainless unskilled work. Totally.
Yes, I understand there are millions of brainless, unskilled "entitlees" in the inner cities who absolutely should be required to work for their section-8 housing and food stamps.
Otherwise....skinny and homeless.
Why not?
No work? Cut them off.
Says the man who has no capital at risk.
To buy an acre of land on the Central California Coastal area will cost you around $70,000 per plus.
The price of that land would undoubtedly be lower if cheap illegal and/or imported labor was not available.
If you are a euro-american he wouldnt hire you. It would piss off the Mexican Mafia that he is deathly afraid of.
Having grown up in California I’ve seen ethnic based hiring first hand. Native born blacks have been run out of large parts of California by Hispanics. Of course those that profit from that will never admit to it. But it is what it is.
Neither are H1B's or J-1's. Lots of people from other countries are invited here legally to take American jobs.
As a businessman, you have to look out for your business. Understood. You have to watch out for your own costs. Etc.
But, when gov't policies allow foreign labor to be cheaper to hire, because there's no social security tax, etc., then there's a problem. There are plenty of hardworking Americans working 2-3 minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. FTR, I'm not in favor of raising the minimum wage, but it would be nice if the higher paying jobs were available to Americans.
People complaining that unskilled jobs like tending grapes vines should be paid $20/hr to attract American workers. My issue is those spending years in college to learn a specific skill barely do more than that. Unskilled work is entry level, if one wants better income learn a trade or a skill.
People complain that in sports we falsely teach kids that everyone deserves a trophy, but think it is okay to expect top wages with no skills to merit it. Americans have issues accepting that a person works up from entry level to better pay.
My statement is based on market economics, so your statement about “everybody gets a trophy” makes no sense.
There’s a lot of people who don’t belong in school piling up debt that’s subsidizing crazy leftists. They should be out tending grapes.
Skill does not necessarily imply college. For goodness sake there are wonderful trades that are highly paid and are achieved by starting at entry level and working up to apprenticeship and tradesman.
Your “market economics” that everyone “deserves” higher pay is what leftists use to demand $15/ hr to flip burgers. Reality dictates that there are entry level jobs and it is ones’ personal responsibility to gain the skills or knowledge to move up from there.
Your market economics that everyone deserves higher pay
...
Stop putting words into my mouth. I never said that.
Stop twisting what I say. I think I have been clear. It is our personal responsibility to have knowledge, skills, talent that merit more than entry level or high school part time wages. But it is pointless to argue with you.
You’re twisting what I said, you jerk.
Bless your heart now you call me names?! Guess only your opinion is valid.
I apologize, now go back to drinking your cheap wine from a box.
Such sincerity. Bless your heart you are very unkind, but I would expect it from your name calling.
I am likely the only person on this thread that has picked grapes. I buy 800 pounds each year from a local vineyard here in central VA. A good friend over in WV and I make wine every year.
After helping some migrant workers pick for a morning I will say that they work their butts off. Put me to shame with their speed picking (Of course I am in my 60s and have essential tremors, so they had some edge :-)
My point is that I imagine it would be a rare high school or college student who would be interested in picking grapes for even $20 an hour. Some might start, but would likely walk away after a couple of hours. It may not sound like hard work, but it is.
I am sure that at some point harvesting equipment will be designed to pick grapes and this whole issue will be history.
