Pope begs forgiveness for church role in Rwanda genocide

Pope Francis on Monday begged forgiveness for the "sins and failings of the church and its members" during Rwanda's 1994 genocide, and told Rwanda's president that he hoped his apology would help the country heal.

In an extraordinary statement after Francis' meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, the Vatican acknowledged that the church itself bore blame, as well as some Catholic priests and nuns who "succumbed to hatred and violence, betraying their own evangelical mission" by participating in the genocide.

Why is Pope Francis accepting at face value the dishonest, anti-Catholic accusations that the Catholic Church was responsible for the killing in Rwanda.

If Pope Francis wants to apologize, he should apologize for his role in causing the suffering in Venezuela, his support for Castro in Cuba and his support for jihadist terrorists.

I had never even heard the accusation, until now, that the Catholic Church somehow had a role in the Rwandan Genocide.

What’s with this Pope????

Being a Southern Baptist, I am no fan of the Catholic Church but I doubt they share any blame for Rwanda.

Just a minute. He’s pope. He should know that God is the one who forgives those who are repentant. He cannot be repentant because he didn’t do anything.

Nor have I.

Idi Amin was a certifiable lunatic. How do you stand up to that?

This Pope is wearing his Papal Cap too tight.

Oops, 1994. Amin was President in the 70s.

"Many of the victims died at the hands of priests, clergymen and nuns, according to some accounts by survivors, and the Rwandan government says many died in the churches where they had sought refuge."

I'm not sure when the Catholic Church became a frequent apologizer for things not done in the name of the Church, but by its sinful representatives (priests and nuns), but I wonder if it really is a good thing to do?

If it makes some of the survivors/their families feel better and more at peace, then fine. But I just have to wonder whether it does...

I know some Christian missionaries who lived there during the genocide. At one time, there were 10,000 refugees living in their mission compound.

I’ve never heard anything about the catholics bearing any culpability in tribal warfare like this.

This dude is just bizarre. He must be a graduate of the Barack Obama Step’N Fetchit Institute of Groveling Arts.

Horse manure.

The Pope is a traitor to his people. More African Christians will be murdered by their Muslim neighbors, thanks to this dolt. He’s just giving them another excuse to do it.

Agreed, I’ve never heard a word about this.

Evidently some Catholics did participate in this, there was some local pent up anger, and it overflowed.

The former Pope didn’t agree with Catholicism taking ownership of the deeds.

If local clergy and parishioners go rogue, it’s not the fault of the Catholic Church (collectively) that doesn’t sanction anything like this.

A general statement of sympathy could be in order, but recognizing you can’t control every member of your organization.

People go rogue sometimes.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the church does relief and charitable works there. The locals probably understand the dynamics of the situation.

I do not think it likely that those in Catholic orders could possibly bear one thousandth part of the culpability of some of the embedded types in our own State Department for the genocidal massacre. We, for over a generation, had pushed the insane policy of "one man/one vote," egalitarian "Democracy," in a geographic area where two very distinct tribal cultures were in play.

Let me point out the relationship between the PC world and the humanist/egalitarian mind set that has run roughshod over ethnic cultures, for many decades: Democracy In The Third World.

It is my contention, that the same lunacy is behind the "Never Trump" mania, today: Trump Haters.

It is high time more of us recognize where genuine concern for others ends, and the most vicious form of Leftist "make believe," for an agenda, takes over.

I read the article, and that's what it seemed to say. Of course, no hint they were somehow organized by the local Bishop, which would be absolutely bonkers. The other vague charge was that Churches were violated as sanctuaries. Imagine that? In a civil-war where 800K people were killed, enraged mobs of Africans didn't recognize the sanctity of churches??? Its all so ridiculous.

First I heard of this. I’m not a fan of the catholic church. They hid pedophiles for years and helped them continue their crimes against children. But this issue I’ve never heard of—doesn’t mean it’s true though.

But if the Catholic Church was part of genocide, what have they done to punish those involved?

“Many of the victims died at the hands of priests, clergymen and nuns, according to some accounts by survivors, and the Rwandan government says many died in the churches where they had sought refuge.”

This is simply dishonest reporting. “Some accounts by survivors” is simply lies told by some to confuse responsibility.

Many did seek refuge in churches. Some of the churches were entered by mobs armed with machetes and those seeking refuge were killed.

There are no credible accounts of priests and nuns in groups slaughtering thousands. This is just dishonest anti-Catholic propaganda.

It’s really too bad he did this, because the anti-religion sect will capitalize on it until the end of time, describing “Admitted Catholic Complicity” for all the mileage they can get every time religion is under attack.

Who advises this guy?

It seems he can’t think in complex terms.

The Catholic Church was not part of the genocide.

This is just anti-Catholic propaganda.
