Spike Lee Calls Out NFL Teams For Not Signing Free Agent Colin Kaepernick
ESPN ^ | March 19 2017 701 central pm | Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Famed film director Spike Lee has joined the Colin Kaepernick debate, suggesting Sunday in an Instagram post that one of his hometown teams -- the New York Jets -- should sign the unemployed quarterback.

"The New York J-E-T-S Need A Quarterback," wrote Lee, who said he spoke with Kaepernick over brunch. "Who Is The J-E-T-S Quarterback? Is My Man Joe Willie Namath Coming Back? Crazy Times We Live In."

Lee used his post to rail against the NFL for excluding Kaepernick, who ignited a firestorm last fall because he refused to stand for the national anthem as a way to protest social and racial issues.

Lee said it "Smells MAD Fishy To Me, Stinks To The High Heavens" that Kaepernick, who opted out of his San Francisco 49ers contract, still doesn't have a job.

Kaepernick will stand for the national anthem during the 2017 season, sources have told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Kaepernick no longer wants his method of protest to detract from the positive change he believes has been created, sources said. The amount of national discussion on social inequality -- as well as support from other athletes nationwide, including NFL and NBA players -- affirmed the message he has tried to deliver.

From Bleacher Report:

“He can still play at a high level,” one AFC general manager said. “The problem is three things are happening with him.

“First, some teams genuinely believe that he can’t play. They think he’s shot. I’d put that number around 20 percent.

“Second, some teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him. They think there might be protests or [President Donald] Trump will tweet about the team. I’d say that number is around 10 percent. Then there’s another 10 percent that has a mix of those feelings.

“Third, the rest genuinely hate him and can’t stand what he did [kneeling for the national anthem]. They want nothing to do with him. They won’t move on. They think showing no interest is a form of punishment. I think some teams also want to use Kaepernick as a cautionary tale to stop other players in the future from doing what he did.”

When I spoke to a handful of executives at the combine a few weeks ago, one even called him “an embarrassment to football.”

“People get second, third and fourth chances all the time - if the talent to wi games is there. there are high and low profile examples every single year.”

Example 1A from last year: Matt Bush the relief pitcher for the Texas Rangers He served time in prison for (I think) manslaughter.

Buy an Arena League team and sign Colin to be your QB, Spike. Problem solved.

(Trying for a reasoned approach)

Kaepernick is not now, nor has he ever been, a first-string QB. Yeah, he fooled the NFL for a season or so, bringing the 49ers to the Super Bowl against the Ravens. However, like the “Wildcat” formation, most coaches worth their whistle figured out how to negate his unorthodox style of play and he became just another QB. Along comes 2016 and he decides to become a “cause celebre” with his kneeling for the National Anthem. If he was a QB of the caliber of Manning or Luck or even Cousins, his talent would have had people calling his antics this year a case of “Colin being Colin”, and a desperate team or two might have chosen to look beyond the childish crap. (Check the NFL Network’s Sunday talking heads for prime examples of such head cases.)

In my mind, this puts him in the “second tier” of QBs, at best. Serviceable, most likely a backup, but could start a few games in a pinch. Definitely not someone you bet the franchise on, even if you are the Cleveland Charlie Browns or either of the jokes calling Los Angeles home.

What I think will happen is that the few teams that could use a QB are most likely going to wait until after the draft to see what they can get, either via picks or trades during the meat market. In that respect, I can see someone signing him in May or June, once the draft is over and everyone has had a chance to evaluate what they have, what they need, and how much they are willing to spend. Don’t forget, there’s that pesky thing called a Salary Cap in the NFL, meaning that 30 or 31 teams are not going to take a $10 Million flier on a player that may be of no use to them.

So, I would tell little Spikey Lee to stop being a racist and see if things work out for his under-talented main man Colin as the spring progresses. If not, there’s always the CFL, where his running talents might be more appreciated, or the AFL, where the shorter field masks his lack of arm strength. And if nothing comes up, I understand that China now has an American-style football league.

Yeah, let ESPN or Sporting News or Spike Lee hire him. I love how they all demand that someone ELSE should hire him.

Yeah, mid pack QB at best. Way too much locker room drama and off field nonsense. I’d be surprised if anyone picks him up. He needs to retire and go sell insurance or some such from a small storefront outfit in a strip mall.
