Interesting. That immediately brings two other questions to mind:

1. Is the crossing even designed correctly?

2. If the crossing is configured in such a way that a vehicle with a long wheelbase can get high-centered on it, are there any warning signs warning approaching drivers about it?

Likely just stupidity. The train seems to have braked just a little bit too late.

“Perhaps that is a requirement that ALL busses should follow.”

Perhaps not. No need for more rules, regulations, and new bureaucracy to implement and administer those new rules and regulations.

NEW DETAILS: Fatal Biloxi crash: At least 27 Bastrop Co. residents were in bus hit by freight train, officials say
5 p.m. update: The president of the Bastrop Senior Center has confirmed to the Statesman that
49 members of the center were on board a bus in Biloxi, Miss., when it was hit by a train
Tuesday in a deadly crash that killed four and injured dozens.

An official from the center has been in touch with one of its members who was on the bus.
She was relaying information back to the senior center, the official said.

It was unclear exactly how many people were on board the bus when it was hit. Earlier reports

The Bastrop Senior Center president said that 51 boarded the bus on Tuesday, but 49 were on

Fifty-two people signed up with the senior center for the trip. One person left the group

We used to have that here in NJ. Casinos used to pack them with elderly folks mostly on day trips to Atlantic City. The drivers were under pressure to get them down there as fast as possible. Used to see big casino buses FLYING down the NJ Turnpike and The Garden State Parkway. Used to be , on average about one or two fatal crashes every other month till it was finally stopped.

If the bus was stopped on the railroad tracks, then the train didn’t collide with the bus because a collision can only occur when two moving objects come together with violent force.

How far did the train have to swerve to hit the bus?

My car was stuck on railroad tracks once (long story). The crowd all said AWWWW when the train stopped just short of hitting my car. No, wasn’t my fault...like I said, long story.

About a month ago, a young man in my neck of the woods was walking the tracks wearing head phones. Amtrak blew the horn repeatedly and tried to stop (from 75-80 mph). The kid didn’t budge. Unfortunately for him, that was his last walk on the tracks. Most folks around here believe it was deliberate suicide.

I guess we were just as dumb when we were young. Mark twain had the idea to shut teenagers up in a barrel with a couple of necessity holes in it, til they were old enough to have some sense.

That’s what I was saying. These are old railroad crossings and old streets, and the inclines and declines on each side of the tracks are steep and short. We have had many large vehicles get stuck on the tracks here on the Coast.

There are signs a few of the crossings that warn against this, but I don’t know that they’re worded clearly enough to let strangers know the real, specific danger.

DAMMIT!!!

When will the gov't FINALLY crack down on these trains that jump the tracks and chase down motor vehicles being properly driven?

My dear mother loved the trips.

So did mine.

One late Sunday evening I got a call from the faraway casino: "Sir; your mother is here and missed her bus. You'll need to come get her."

I told mom that from now on she'd better have some money Unlost that she can use to get back home on!

(Bad son that I am; I made her fill my gas tank!)
