Got to have a way to verify who a political or famous person is, FB verifies.
Wouldn’t want just anyone using a political person’s name and posting a lot of “fake” crap.

I just did a Google and here is what I found out about the Blue Check mark on Facebook.
"Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences," wrote Facebook on its Newsroom page, although the social network warned that not every authentic profile or page has been verified.
Facebook launches Verified Pages with check marks nearly identical to Twitter's badge
