"But Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos warned of consequences, including potential retaliation and a drop in visitor numbers precipitating substantial losses for the continents tourism industry."
The EU loses on this one. Americans are notoriously lazy when it comes to leisure travel. If they are told they need a Visa to go to France or Italy (for example), they will just decide to go somewhere else.
The EU will lose YUGE.
(ps: I searched for this and didn't find it. There is also a story on cnn but I won't cite fake news)
No tourism dollars from me....
Great! Learn something worthwhile! SEE AMERICA FIRST! The “old country” is so passé.
Gee, all those “garden spots” in Eastern Europe I’ve been longing to visit. Oh what will I do?
Lol, I finally have the money to take my family to Europe, my wife, “Uh, no it’s too dangerous with all those refugees.”
Those countries are going to really pissed. Romanians, for example, are happy to see Americans and will not appreciate the EU sticking their big Belgian noses into this.
Sounds fair to me.
They have the right to control their borders and decide how to admit folks.
If they want us to get visas to visit, that is their choice.
I wouldn’t retaliate.
Not a problem, since I have no desire to even visit Europe anymore. It ain’t what it used to be.
“””””The EU loses on this one. Americans are notoriously lazy when it comes to leisure travel.””””
Used to go fishing in Canada, eh. Now you need a passport. Screw dat. Plenty of other lakes in the USA.
Imposing a visa requirement on US citizens who wish to travel there and spend dollars will have an impact on their tourist economies. Getting a visa is a small inconvenience.
Fine with me. And when they make it too difficult for people from a non-terrorist country to go to theirs, they can become aware that our tourist money will go to Disney World and not there.

Trump has been talking about extreme vetting to reduce the chance of terrorists entering the U.S. The only way to vet people is through the visa application process. Currently the U.S. does not require visas for visitors from 38 countries, including France, Germany, Belgium, and the UK where there are domestic Islamic terror cells active. If the U.S. starts requiring visas from any of those 38 countries in order to vet visitors then those countries will require that we get visas in return.
I have Zero desire to go to Europe never did
What the EU failed to bring up while discussing this....this has been a problem for a number of years, and only affecting five countries. Most Europeans countries don’t have a problem, and will absolutely not vote in establishing some stupid visa program....so the odds of this discussion amounting to anything is less than one-percent.
A lot of EU members already have a problem with Cyprus and the way that it sells citizenship.
Leave the good old USA to visit Europe? Not in this lifetime. Heck, this USA is one big country, and a person will never run out of swell places to visit, not even in ten lifetimes.
I’m fine with any country - including our own - requiring visas for anyone they let into their, repeat, THEIR country. It’s their country. Let them run it how they see fit. If I want to go there and they require a visa then I’ll get a visa.
They’d havevto make me want to go back first.
Hope they hold their breath while they wait.
Interesting that they are saying the problem is with four eastern European countries and Cyprus. Eastern Europe is the sphere of non-cooperation with the horde migrations. Screw Western Europe, why would I want to go there now?
Did those recent troop deployments to Europe all get visas? No? Oh dear, better bring ‘em all back home PDQ.
I say fine, if EU stompy-feet want to kill tourism then by all means, kill it.
