President Trump may urge lawmakers to pass a compromise immigration reform bill during his speech to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night..
Trump told a group of television anchors he believes a major immigration bill is necessary but would require Republicans and Democrats to make significant trade-offs.
"The time is right for an immigration bill as long as there is compromise on both sides," Trump said, according to CNN's Jake Tapper.
Trump envisions a proposal that would allow some undocumented immigrants to live and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation, but would stop short of offering them a pathway to citizenship.
Such a move would be a departure from the hardline stance on illegal immigration Trump has taken thus far in his presidency.
At Trumps direction, the federal government adopted strict new rules intended to ramp up deportations of immigrants living illegally in the U.S.
He also handed down an executive order temporarily banning travel and immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations, which was later blocked by a federal court. Trump has said he will unveil a new proposal soon.
Three of the guests who are sitting in first lady Melania Trump's box for the president's speech to Congress are relatives of people killed by undocumented immigrants.
Pushing for a comprehensive reform bill could anger Trump's base, which favors a get-tough approach on illegal immigration. But Trump reportedly believes he could make both sides happy.
Trump flirted with a comprehensive immigration bill earlier this month, when he told a group of bipartisan senators he was interested in them working on a bill.

” .... Trump said, according to CNN’s Jake Tapper.”
That right there tells you this article is pure bovine droppings. Any faint hearts here sipping the MSM kool-aid and swooning from the vapors should re-read his Contract With America, and his statement of what he intended to do on his first day, and during his first one hundred days.
25. “Work with Congress on an End Illegal Immigration Act Fully-funds the construction of a wall on our southern border with the full understanding that the country Mexico will be reimbursing the United States for the full cost of such wall; establishes a 2-year mandatory minimum federal prison sentence for illegally re-entering the U.S. after a previous deportation, and a 5-year mandatory minimum for illegally re-entering for those with felony convictions, multiple misdemeanor convictions or two or more prior deportations; also reforms visa rules to enhance penalties for overstaying and to ensure open jobs are offered to American workers first.”
This is MSM wishful thinking. Tapper is a partisan hack. CNN is fake news.
Donald Trump is president because he promised to remove ALL illegal aliens and then keep them out. Anyone here in violation of our immigration laws has to go back.
All he’s doing is prioritizing, as he said he would. In his first one hundred days he promised to have ICE locate, arrest and remove alien felons, the really bad hombres, and that’s exactly what he’s doing.
He’s savvy enough to know that if he welches on his contract with us, he’s toast.
The Art of the Squeal Like a Pig.
Trump said, according to CNNs Jake Tapper.
Hmm. Should I trust CNNs Jake Tapper?”
After all it is Fake Jake Tapper.
You would think that if they had respect for this country they would be begging instead of demanding.
what will he do with the 80 gazillion that came and continue to come via the NAFTA train...there are so many we are giving away our country!
There is simply no way that Trump will be able to deport all of the illegal aliens. I think he will harden the resolve of his political opponents—which includes many Republicans—if he deports the hard cases, i.e. people who came here as children and stayed all their lives, aka Dreamers. There is room for compassion toward some, but as another FReeper posted, the devil is in the details.
The vast majority MUST leave, the wall MUST be built, penalties against employers MUST be enforced, visa overstays MUST be tracked down and deported, etc. When Trump compromises—I’m sure he will—he has to be able to prove the problem is actually solved. We can’t be back to open borders as usual in a of couple years.
That’s my two cents for what it’s worth.
I want to see the borders secured first. And only after they prove the borders are secure do I want to talk about the illegals here.
I was at first puzzled and then concerned that AG Sessions has had so little to say so far. And nothing that I’ve heard from him on immigration. He’s made statements about marijuana and rising crime, but not on the subject he’s probably devoted the largest amount of his time to since 2006.
Just who has Trump been listening to concerning immigration? IMHO, it would be a serious betrayal of his supporters to start any sort of negotiations with Congress for a new immigration bill. NO reason to compromised about any immigration matter this soon. He needs to do all his can under existing law - which has been largely ignored since 1986 - and have nothing to do with any new immigration bill until current law has been enforced for a good number of years.
“They have to go back.”
Not “stay.”
“Go back.”
“Comprehensive immigration reform” is a euphemism for amnesty in one form or another.
“They have to go back” or there will never be any respect for our laws.
Not what I meant...
I meant the idea.
Good one. I’ll use that one from here on in.
I am convinced the Washington DC is just plain evil and anyone who goes there is instantly turned into leftist tool. The place need to be destroyed in a violent civil war.

My bulls#*t detector is clanging too!
I don’t really think Trump would choose the weasel Jake Tapper to give this scoop to.
If true the underside of the Trump Bus is about to get its first occupants. Jeff Session, ICE, and the US Border patrol all about to be thrown thrown under the bus.
He will do something on this front unfortunately. He alluded to this when he answered the question on dreamers recently and said this is a very hard subject for him because we need to do things with a heart.
I believe the reason he said this now (if did in fact say it) is to counter the narrative that will re-emerge tomorrow that he hates all immigrants when he signs the new 7-nation travel ban. One thing I’ve noticed is that they like to keep issues and stories moving very fast, perhaps to muddy the water on the Russia BS stories so nothing really gets much traction. The last time the Russia leaker BS and Flynn firing dominated the news cycle, Trump did a presser and declared war on fake news which sucked up all of the air in the media. Which is very smart because what Trump needs now is to control the press as much as he can while he smokes out as many subversives as possible. He needs another 30-60 days perhaps if he is going to stay this course and not just outright fire 300-500 people on a Friday afternoon.
I just about agree. Trump would probably have to compromise, or make some deals on immigration at some point years from now, but he needs to just enforce existing law and accomplish all he can on the wall at least until the 2018 mid-terms. If he does that and gets the economy and job creation going, Republicans will pick up a good number of senate seats and things will be easier.
If he starts compromising and giving ground on his main campaign promises so soon, he'll kill a lot of enthusiasm among his supporters and many of them will sit out some elections in the future.
Absolute BS! I am sick of COMPROMISE. Build the freaking wall and enforce the law! Kick ALL illegals out! WTF cares if liberals piss and moan. This country is turning into a third world toilet that is hemorrhaging money to pay for a welfare state. Furthermore, there is very little assimilation and we are losing our national identity and heritage. The left can name call all they want and if they want CWII bring it. In my estimation, President Trump will be the last president with this golden opportunity to make things right. Scorch earth the scum liberals and their globalist allies like Soros.
That’s a good point on Jeff Sessions, he has been the ideal example on proper immigration enforcement.
- ID. Every illegal is required to register; they will be assigned some kind of special gov't ID; 3 month grace - caught without ID, immediate expulsion never to return
Wall - duh
Sanctuary - No cities, states, campuses, etc - all agree to fully participate with feds
14A - clarified to disallow anchor babies
No ID, no work - must be regularized to pay into system so as not to rip-off social programs
Concessions:
- Everyone assigned ID after background check with affidavit from employer(s) in good stead are allowed to remain (but no path to citizenship); - Children already born here are citizens - Dreamers - path
The end result is that nothing changes accept for legal processes. Ends future anchors, enforces border, begins assimilation of those already here. Makes illegals taxpayers unable to game system via cash/under table wages. Pulls off long GOP strategy of making Mexicans republican voters.
Alternative - deportation fights with every state & local authorities, Congressional push back, judicial blocks, horrible optics.
Why should have done something fifty years ago I wonder if it is too late already
