Pope Francis has been slammed by church officials and sex abuse survivors for cutting penalties for paedophile priests. The Pope is said to be applying his vision of a 'merciful church' to sex offenders by reducing punishments to weaker sentences, such as a lifetime of prayer and penance. It has been revealed by church officials that Pope Francis overruled advice given to him by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith about two priests - allowing them to be punished by a lifetime of prayer.

Papa Francis is full of the socialist South American liberation Marxism. The pope is sort of an Obama without the tan, pretend Roman Catholic. Pray to God that Christianity out lasts this false representative of the faith.
I was talking about parish priests. That has been my experience. I don't know that much about the Jesuits but as you say I have heard bad things about them so you might be right. Pope Francis is a Jesuit.

Incidences of sexual abuse declined when Pope John Paul II and then Cardinal Ratzinger went after homosexual priests.
When Cardinal Ratzinger became Pope Benedict he defrocked over 800 homosexual priests. The network remains but it is far less powerful than it once was.

There’s absolutely no evidence that priests are more likely to abuse children than are other groups of men. The use and abuse of children as objects for the sexual gratification of adults is epidemic in all classes, professions, religions, and ethnic communities across the globe, as figures on child pornography, incest, and child prostitution make abundantly clear. Pedophilia (the sexual abuse of a prepubescent child) among priests is extremely rare, affecting only 0.3% of the entire population of clergy. This figure, cited in the book Pedophiles and Priests by non-Catholic scholar, Philip Jenkins, is from the most comprehensive study to date, which found that only one out of 2,252 priests considered over a thirty-year period was afflicted with pedophilia. In the recent Boston scandal, only four of the more than eighty priests labeled by the media as “pedophiles” are actually guilty of molesting young children.
Pedophilia is a particular type of compulsive sexual disorder in which an adult (man or woman) abuses prepubescent children. The vast majority of the clerical sex-abuse scandals now coming to light do not involve pedophilia. Rather, they involve ephebophilia — homosexual attraction to adolescent boys. While the total number of sexual abusers in the priesthood is much higher than those guilty of pedophilia, it still amounts to less than 2 percent — comparable to the rate among married men (Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests.

What was the sentence?
I don't think there are checks and balances in Church hierarchy. My guess is the Pope's authority in Church penalties is absolute.
Civil authorities, on the other hand, report to people who report to the public or report directly to the public. Civil penalties include such things as prison.
This story doesn't tell if this convicted felonious pervert wound up in prison.

Christianity is far bigger than The Church, thank God. (see above about me being an agnostic...)
First, any man who takes advantage of a child should no longer be a priest. Second, he should be subject to whatever civil penalties applied him to.
The idea of giving them anything less is not mercy, but it is a bit of mindlessness. They are not entitled to any mercy after committing such a crime against a child.
What is wrong with this Pope’s mind that he would consider ?something like this? These are not men, they are scum!
Call it whatever you like, it is child sexual abuse...by a priest. Think about it...a priest! Good heavens. Sexual molestation by a priest. Please don't down play this. Hundreds and hundreds of young boys have fallen victim and likely a lifetime of dysfunction of all sorts.
Unlike the media who believe in protecting homosexual priests, I believe all homosexual priests should be defrocked and prosecuted if they have committed a crime.
The media is doing three things.
1. Protecting the homosexuals by falsely reporting that young children are sexually assaulted by priests when almost all instances are homosexual priests having sex with boys in their mid to late teens. Boys in their teens are the most attractive and sought after by adult homosexuals.
2. Vilifying good priests by spreading the false narrative that most or all priests have sex with young boys. There is a problem with homosexual priests and bishops. Several books including “Goodbye Good Men” have documented the network of homosexual priests and bishops who protect and promote each other. All these homosexuals should be defrocked.
3. Denying the efforts of Cardinal Ratzinger who became Pope Benedict to remove homosexuals from the priesthood. Pope Benedict defrocked over 800 homosexual priests.
No matter how much humans fail us, I could never leave Catholicism or the Eucharist. To whom would I go?
The Catholic Church has the fullness of the faith. Even Peter and Thomas were idiots at times— and they had the advantage of having Christ standing right in front of them working miracles. Human leadership of the Church Militant will always be flawed... but that’s the way Christ set it up.
